I think it's possible to like both characters, as long as you're willing to accept that they're both flawed. It's a lot easier to fixate on Snape. He gets a lot more character development since he's, you know, actually alive for most of the series, and the reader actually gets into his head several times via memories, flashbacks, magic textbooks, etc. We only get other people's memories of James, and only over a very specific point in time. And since he was a major jackass to Snape in the only scene the two of them ever share, some people have decided to use that moment to define his entire character.

And honestly, while I have serious problems with woobie!Snape, I don't have an issue with that. I don't agree with the interpretation, and I don't think that it's supported by the series canon as a whole, but again it's James. We don't have much to work with. If you want to run with the narrative that James was nothing but a bully and Snape was a little asshole who left a wake of destruction behind him, but finally figured out how to do the right thing for the wrong reasons and helped save the world... cool.
