Bioshock or Boderlands

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I have owned both on Steam forever and want to play with. Which should I play?

I've never played Bioshock, but Borderlands is great.

Bioshock is awesome, Bioshock 2 is sublime.

I just beat Bioshock and I would recommend it

Can you give me your thoughts on it? I'm curious as to what other people think about it.

I liked it a lot (obviously since I'm recommending it) though the last couple levels were rather underwhelming (which I hear is a common complaint). I also think that if the game rewarded you less for saving the Little Sisters it would better drive home the anti-objectivist lean; I've mentioned that on here before though, and even so I'm kinda glad it doesn't do that cause then the game isn't too hard for me :p

Definitely enjoyed the story and visuals though. I'm gonna try and beat the whole trilogy over the next few months (can't play often cause college)

Bioshock is almost exactly like its predecessor System Shock 2 in so many ways -- from the progression structure (game is split up into themed levels, each with their own sub-plot, that you can travel back and forth from -- and both games properly begin with a hospital level after a brief opener) to the kind of shitty hacking (SS2's is way worse tho) to the mid-to-late-game reveal that can be seen coming a mile away to the endgame being kind of underwhelming and even linear to a fault. BS had a better boss fight tho.

I love both series, but my favorite entries are the ones Ken Levine didn't work on (System Shock 1 and Bioshock 2.)

I've never played the System Shock series myself but its a personal favorite of my brother (who got me into games). Surprised BS had a better boss battle though, it was so easy! :p

Still, i think despite the kinda disappointing final chapter it was a great game overall, I'm really glad I played it and am excited to play the rest of the series.

Both SS games are available on GoG, they're worth a try! :D

Unfortunately my computer is no good for gaming, I do everything on console. Maybe when I eventually get a new one though

Warning. Do not give dethtoll your thoughts on it. It's a trap. If you don't like something he likes he will give you a tirade explaining in uncreative ad hominms why you are ethically and intelectually wrong. If you do like something he doesn't like, same thing with added self righteousness. If you like it, or don't but not in the right way, you're still in for a fight. Walk away. If you're not Dethtoll, you can't win with him if you dare to have an opinion.

I ain't scared of dethtoll buddy, besides, since I'm recommending it clearly I like it.

Well good for you (Not sarcastic). I used to be deathly afraid of confrontation. Dethtoll's bullshit caused me so many frigging panic attacks. Not his fault, I know. My mental problems are my own and it's not his job to be a nice person just because it might make someone else's day a little bit unbearable I'm just giving a heads up to anyone who doesn't like being spoken to like shit that they might want to give the guy a miss.

I don't like confrontation irl and am no stranger to panic attacks over it, but online I can literally walk away from it if it gets nasty or too personal or whatever and that helps. If a convo on here starts causing me anxiety I stop reading it and either ignore the thread or F!S entirely. Its a great thing I can't really do in real life.

If you're having panic attacks because of someone on the internet maybe you could... not talk to them? You can literally just walk away. But it's kind of rude to tell everyone you know not to talk to someone just because you don't like them, especially since Dethtoll isn't nearly as bad as you're implying. I can think of several named users here who are worse, like Herpy or Blitzwing. At least Dethtoll has shown he cares about other people sometimes.

Which one do you feel like playing? Try playing a bit of both and see how it goes.

I'll always recommend BioShock, though I've heard good things about Borderlands.

Went through BioShock again last year and it was as great an experience as ever. It holds up.

(I've been thinking about playing the others again too, and at least watching the DLC since I never got to play it.)

You might want to test each one though, and see which strikes your fancy atm.

Borderlands is pretty good. The sequel is better, story-wise, but both games are basically first-person Diablo clones with guns.

They look like fun and I'd probably enjoy them, they've just never been high on my list.

Maybe I should watch a let's play since I'll probably never get around to it.

Both! Bioshock is shorter though. Their immediate sequels are easily the best in their respective series btw.

Oh, really? I bought the first three Bioshock games a while ago as some combo deal thing, but it turns out that I really dislike the first one (because of the practically nonexistent story & boring gameplay). What do you think's better about the second one? It'd be cool if I don't end up hating the entire series, haha.

Re: Bioshock or Boderlands

[personal profile] dethtoll 2016-01-31 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
practically nonexistent story

I can't really say anything about the gameplay as that's purely subjective but this is completely wrong. The problem with the story isn't that it doesn't exist, it's just that it's a bit ham-fisted because Ken Levine isn't as smart as he thinks he is. Bioshock 2's story is told the exact same way (i.e. 90% of it is in audio logs) it's just better written.

Bioshock Infinite's story is more in-your-face but it's even more hamfisted than the original and not only makes some lame and even dangerous points, but it undermines its own half-interesting concept for some bullshit baby's first alternate universe plot. The DLC makes up for it though.

(To say nothing about the gameplay differences -- Bioshock 1's forcing you to swap between conventional weapons and plasmids was probably just because nobody thought of dual weilding, which Bioshock 2 lets you do. Combat's a lot better in BS2, not least because the levels are better designed with more open spaces. Bioshock Infinite, meanwhile, is a Call of Duty-esque fuckfest that trades complexity for chaos.)

Borderlands. Brighter. More fun. More socially aware. Playable women who kick ass. Lots of guns.

What do you mean "socially aware?"
