it's so very redneck. I don't know if you're going redneck. Buckley is a little less redneck, little more yuppie, but no one would ever call him by his full name so he'd always be Buck and that's sad.

Buckley to me will forever be associated with the wimpy lil boy from Bloom County, but Buck sounds like a country boy to me (but in a good way.) So I would say that as far as I am personally concerned, Buckley would sound kind of silly but Buck is okay.

Seconding the cough syrup comment. And that it sounds more hillbilly than hipster.

And if you don't think that at some point he won't be called Fuckley/Fuck, you're kidding yourself.

Want a good old fashioned name, go for John. Out of the 700 or so elementary aged kids I work with, there is only one John/Jon. In almost 20 years, I've worked maybe 10 boys named John. Jack isn't overly common either, though there are a few more of those, and that includes Jackson/Jaxon.

Ehh. In my opinion, Buckley is exact opposite of non-pretentious and it's incredibly yuppie while also being incredibly redneck at the same time.

TBH, I'd be embarrassed if my name were Buckley. You pretty mnuch have to go by Buck, because Buckley sounds too silly, but Buck is hardly better and it's the only nickname.

Buckley sound pretentious and wimpy. Buck sounds macho and redneck. Neither is great if the kid isn't naturally cool and popular, or a bug, strong type who can beat up all the bullies.

I know any name can get mocked by bullies, even the "normal" ones, but some are easier targets than others, and Buckley is basically a "kick me" sign that the poor kid can't remove.

'Buckley' makes me instantly think of William F. Buckley, Jr. So there is that.
And 'Buck' is...kind of weirdly 'country hick beefcake', like the pretty, golden boy who's not too smart and fixes your roof in his jeans with no shirt.

Or, you know, Bucky Barnes. :)

I kind of hate it, I'm sorry. It just makes me think of either Joe Buck (AWFUL), or buck teeth (not great). If we were introduced at a mommy group, I would have secret judgement.

I dunno. It sounds slightly pretentious to me, like it'd be part of a name like "Buckley Walter FitzKennedy III". Shortening it to "Buck" makes it worse, it sounds kind of rednecky or mountain man-ish. Also it's too close to "Bucky", IMO.

Buckley's not a bad name, but... you might want to steer away from overtly unconventional or trendy names. Sometimes it looks a little too contrived, or there's a risk of making the kid look twee when he isn't at all.

Names are important, right? They make an impression. And there are so many names that already look dated! I think another ten years into teaching I'm going to be able to say "yep! Last names as first names trend!" And then a few years after that will be "everyone is named Ella." It's like that period where like one of every ten girls was named Madison because everyone liked Splash. The current trend is making absolutely sure nobody has a name like your kid.

I really like Buck as a nickname, but maybe it's better as a middle name? Or give him a funny first name but a middle name he could use instead if he ever wants? Judgey people suck, but he's going to be encountering them constantly.

Edit: I do think it's a little contrived to be planning nicknames before the kid even has a personality to generate a nickname. "Buck" is more like a real nickname than a normal shortening of a longer name, isn't it?
