What media would you most want to show your hypothetical kids?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have kids, or hypothetical kids, what media - movie, book, whatever - would you most want your kids to watch/read/whatever?

I'd want them to watch the old cartoons - The Jetsons, The Flintstones, Looney Tunes.

Books? Probably Little House on the Prairie, I loved that series growing up.

And Harry Potter.

I'd want to watch the Disney movies. A lot of the older live action ones and the older cartoons too.

I'd read them The Hobbit when they were young. And Lord of the Rings as soon as I thought they were old enough. I'd show them the LOTR movies as well. Maybe the Hobbit ones later.

Star Wars. Star Trek. Babylon 5. Marvel movies. Doctor Who. Read and watch Harry Potter. Buffy when I thought they were old enough.

But not having kids so all of this is moot.

Probably a bunch of Studio Ghibli films. Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, etc. I like them for kids because they are imaginative, feature strong female (and male!) leads, and they are not so... super fast paced and flashy? I feel like a lot of kids' media is just way too sudden, fast, whatever - I think it'd be better to get kids into more patient stories that take time to enjoy the background and quiet.

I watched some Ghibli films with my niece and nephew when they were small. They LOVED The Cat Returns.

My dad's on one of those phases too and it's fun to watch the old shows. We've been watching Chips, Emergency, Mork and Mindy, Mash, and Andy Griffith a lot lately.

Happy Days is another one that's good.

Your sister story is so cute. That song was one of my favorites when I was a teenager (that and Fill Your Heart by Bowie).

Goonies, Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, tamer episodes of The X-Files, Star Trek TOS.

Classic games. Super metroid or ff6, something like that. Get them away from intentionally addictive, money-sucking mobile shit.

Star Trek original movies. If they like them, I'd show them TOS and TNG; if not, then at least I will have given them the foundation of a good fandom education.

TOMP is so boring, though. It'll turn your kid off of Star Trek if it's their first exposure.

My kids are gonna watch The Dark Crystal and the animated Rankin Bass Hobbit movie and LIKE it. Also Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small quartet because dammit those books contain some fine life lessons and are also just generally awesome.

Oh I cannot wait to make a collection of kids movies for my future children! Lion King, Mulan, Land Before Time, Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away... then the books! My parents read to me before bed each night, things like LOTR and Narnia, I'd probably do the same. I'd want them to play classic games, too, so they'd never whine about graphics.

When they are real little, Rugrats. As they get older, I Love Lucy, Roseanne, and Twilight Zone.

Old Disney cartoons like Aladdin or Chip n Dale, Gibli stuff,

Also whatever they feel like reading, as long as it's appropriate for their age (no porn lol), fairy tales, etc.

Seconding old games like Metroid, Zelda, etc. Gotta prepare them for the 3D stuff when they are older.

And I guess whatever they feel like watching as long as it's not too traumatizing for them. I remember watching tons of horror movies (thanks family) and they scared the crap out of me and I couldn't sleep at night. I enjoy them as an adult, but as a kid it was too much for me.

This may be weird since it's such a dark show, but I can't wait to show my future kids Breaking Bad...also since my fiancé and I are both wild about the West Wing, I'm hoping we can just be a West Wing family.

There's also a lot of music I can't wait to introduce them to, and Harry Potter will be so much fun.

As is the case with most people I encounter in life, I don't think my potential kids will understand half of what I say if they haven't seen The Simpsons & F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Those were both incredibly big formative influences in my life, and they've influenced the way I communicate.

I don't want kids, but I definitely have things I want to introduce to the youngsters of the family.

Lord of the Rings is the big one, but I also think they'd like Kingdom Hearts. I've tried Portal with a few of the older kids and they seemed to dig it.

Maybe Super Mario 64 and Sonic Adventure.

Oh, and Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

Probably Xena and Indiana Jones. They already know Star Wars so that ship has sailed.

Plus some older cartoons. (Animaniacs, Pinky and the brain, etc.)

Things I have introduced my kids to:

Harry Potter, Princess Bride, Singing in the Rain, Flight of Dragons, Neil Gaiman, Tamora Pierce, Super Mario Bros., LoTR, anime and manga in general, comic books in general.

Things I got into because of my kids:

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Protip: If your kids show no interest in something you want them to watch or play, don't push. Just sit down and watch it or play it on your own. Get into it. They'll usually wander in and hover at the edges until they get sucked in. Try it two or three times. If they still show no interest, it just wasn't meant to be.

Books - I'd introduce them to Harry Potter, Redwall, Diana Wynne Jones, really a majority of the things on my shelf whenever they're ready to read them but those three in particular.

Movies... definitely Studio Ghibli. Star Wars, original trilogy first. The classic Disney animated canon.

For TV, definitely Star Trek. Classic Looney Toons and such.

And video games. I really hope they'd grow up with Nintendo games, both the classics and the later greats. And there might be PC games to share when they're a little older, though I'd definitely have to put some parental controls on my decidedly-not-kid-friendly Steam library, haha. Maybe just a laptop or tablet with Minecraft on it. Kids love Minecraft. I do too.

Diensy films, old and new.

Star Wars. All of it. Shows included.

Harry Potter. All of it. Legos, all of it.

Animorphs, even if I have to upload those badly done PDFs to a kindle for them to read, I will do it!!

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic because it's awesome.

If Monster High and Ever After High is still around, or some variant of it, then yes.

If it's not dead by then and they are old enough for it, World of Warcraft, as the game itself is pretty ok and fun. I'll just make sure they understand about assholes and shit in chat and guilds.

Dr. Seuss, of course. Bill Nye and Mr. Rogers.

Pokemon as well. But it'll be the newer stuff as I don't think any future kids of mine would really like teh old games. Unless they just happen to like retro. I won't ban them from it, but the newer stuff is better looking and plays faster and yeah.

Other stuff as well, but I'm tired and can't think of anything else right off.
