Re: Sad anon looking for guidance. Trigger warning for suicide/depression I think.

I've already invested over $20,000 into a JD, money that I can't get back now. I have a B.A. in English which is functionally useless. I've always wanted to go into medicine and become a doctor but I completely missed the boat. My depression and some of my parent's/my choices have completely held me back.

It's a complicated situation and I just can't see it changing now. Quitting law school would be just another failure.

DA

Couldn't you compromise and take a break from school to get treatment?

I'd have to go through an entire semester, which I'm not sure it's possible for me to do. My parents are old and feel under the gun, so I doubt they'd be very encouraging. IDK

You've reached suicidal depression. Your parents' feelings on the matter of your schooling are not as important right now. The spring semester's just started so there's a good chance you can withdraw now and get some if not all of your tuition back -- and even if you can't, one semester's loss doesn't matter. If you take an academic leave, you can come back when you're better. It'll take some work to pull it all together but come on, let's use it and distract yourself. If you're not going to class tomorrow anyway, research this option instead. Just having a sense of a plan matters so much when you're depressed.

I probably will end up doing the reading and going to class. I end up sort of forcing this stuff. Sometimes I leave it off in the hopes that the stress will give me the force needed to carry out a suicide plan, but it never works. I'm very absorbed in the status quo.

I hear what you're saying, and it makes sense, but at the same time, I just feel like I CANNOT do it. I don't know how to explain it. I have a list of therapists in my wallet that I wanted to call and go to for help but never did. I don't know if it's fear, I don't know what it is...I don't know how to change it.

It might help if you gradually open yourself to the possibility of doing something different? If any of the steps feel too drastic, just keep thinking about the plan in little ways until you're more at ease with it. Like, what if you took 6 months off school? It's not quitting, because you can go back, and people take semesters off all the time for various reasons so it's not even unusual. And what if you could get 75% of this semester's tuition refunded? That's better than nothing, it would make the conversation with your parents that much easier. Absorb yourself in this, little by little.

this is a sunk cost fallacy. it is complicated, but you have to cut yourself out of these circumstances.

the only thing worth salvaging in this situation is you.

As someone who is attending her 3rd college, this is 100% not the case! It's not a "fail" to go somewhere that makes you happy.

...You know you can still go to med school with a B.A. right? You just have to pass the MCAT and make up required courses.

Shoot for your dreams, OP. It's the only way to really be happy in life.
