the wrath of khan, that is considered the best star trek movie of the old ones, was written by Nick Meyer who admitted he never watched trek and wasn't a fan before making that movie.
The two trek movies by JJ were both more critically acclaimed and made more money than most of the old movies combined.
Point? the most successful trek movies were the ones made by non trek fans

ps: I gotta remind that William Shatner himself is not really a star trek fan since he never ever watched one episode of it and he admitted that. He's a trek fan only in terms of being someone who played the main character in it but he's not interested about watching trek.
