Are you serious?

Fanfiction writers don't get paid for what they do. They don't get awards, don't get IRL recognition, nothing. They work their asses off to provide you with a good story and you don't even have the decency to take thirty seconds of your time to write "This was good! Thank you!" in a comment box?

If you enjoyed a story, FUCKING COMMENT. That one-shot/chapter you just read probably took days to put together, the very least you could do is drop a comment to let the author know you liked it.

Agreed 100%

Are you serious?

Fanfic writers write, or should be writing, because they a) enjoy writing stuff about the series they love and b) enjoy being part of a fandom. If they are writing purely for high-fives, then they should probably just get another part-time job instead.

I agree if you really enjoy a fic, it's a good gesture to give your appreciation but you are under no means obligated, and it isn't rude not to.

Dafuq my dude/tte, why can't it be all three? Fandom artists aren't Jesus. They aren't selfless robots. They're real people.

Why is it so wrong for them to want recognition? To want "high-fives"? I don't know about you, but when I draw something for someone I expect to be thanked. That doesn't mean I enjoyed drawing it any less. Just that I expect the effort I put into it to be acknowledged by the one(s) I created it for.

It's not too much to ask. I draw for you, you feed me with likes/comments/reblogs/kudos/whatthefuckever if you like it. I gain confidence from the response, and as thanks, I draw more. I'm not going to draw for people who won't appreciate it. Fuqdat. I might as well quit drawing fanworks (or keep it private) and focus on original stuff since at least I'll get paid for it.

Then do that: self-publish originals and make your own audience. Or draw for yourself and don't post, whatever makes you more happy.

Because the whole fandom doesn't have to "thank you" for drawing something for everyone in that fandom when no one asked you to (and really, in the end, kudos and other non-comment kind of feedback is valid or not? I keep seeing comments that seem from the same person but sometimes they hate kudos, sometimes they count as "feeding" the creator. Consistence, there is none.).

DA: This.

Yes, it stings not to get kudos/comments. I try to give kudos if I've enjoyed the fic at all, plus a comment if I have something to say other than "I liked this." (To me, a kudos means "I liked this.")

That said, you chose to put your work out there. Nobody is obliged to reward you for doing so. If your work does not move anyone to comment or kudos, write better.

NA
No one on either side is obligated, but it's kinda like voting, seems to me. If you don't exercise your vote, you don't get to bitch about how crappy your government is. If you don't kudos/comment/whatever, you don't get to complain that no one writes the kind of fic you like.

Do you know how disheartening in is to write a multi-chapter story, only to have people just slap it on their favorites/alert and not give one review? Or the fact you posted a new chapter and there's no response? I don't beg reviews - never have, never will but I remembered back in ff.net days where people were actually courteous.
