I think this is a nice thing to do. I don't see it as "desperate" at all, I see it as kind and appreciative. Please don't stop!

I don't understand the place that people who do see it as "desperate" or a sneaky way of inflating comment count are coming from AT ALL, and I'm really grateful my brain doesn't work that way because it seems like a really nasty way to see the world.

Especially because there is absolutely nothing sneaky about it at all! Everyone who opens the fic can see see whether the author responds to comments. (I think this especially bothers me because I have had some really nice comment threads that have come from responding to comments, and even made some fandom friends with people who have likeminded interests and perspectives that way, and seeing how antisocial the mindsets of some in fandom are about this process is downright depressing.)

They're jealous assholes who figure that if anyone else is getting a lot of comments, they must be "cheating" somehow. Nobody leaves THEM comments!
