I can see your point.

I always reply to comments, and I really wish I had heard from all the people who wrote for me during the Yuletide exchange. :( And I said more than just "Love it! Thanks!"

The reason I reply to comments is because I write for small fandoms, and one in particular is not only small, but obscure and nearly dead. Any response I get from other fans is extremely rare, and I will always reply with my eternal gratitude. I dying for connection with other fans. But then AO3 doesn't seem to be much of a platform for developing conversations beyond that.
