Before I comment on a fic, I always check if the author replies to the comments. If they do, I make sure to leave a comment. If they don't, I won't bother commenting. (I will still leave kudos if I like the fic, of course.)

S!B: Yes, I know this is petty, especially when so many author (me included) are desperate for comments. But I consider it basic manners to reply, even with a simple "thank you!"

THIS!

I had,a horrible time trying to decide whether or not to reply to comments when I first started posting to AO3 because whilst they provided a venue for replies, it didn't seem to be the culture of the site to do so.

I reply to comments now, but I still feel a vague sense of guilt for the ones I didn't reply to.

Yeah, same. I felt bad about the increased comment rate.

Thirded! I feel bad about the older comments I never replied to, but it seems silly to go back now (sometimes years!) and reply. And I still feel bad about "artificially" upping the comment count, so there's guilt coming and going. :/

Oooh... many people here must really hate me then. *L* I have a co-author that I work with regularly and we BOTH do our own replies to comments if we feel we have something more to add.

Honestly, I never even gave a thought to it 'upping the count'. I never search that way myself so I didn't dawn on me.

Don't worry about it. Some people don't mind it (or prefer it, even) and some hate it. You can't please everyone. Keep doing what you're doing if it makes you happy.

I can see your point.

I always reply to comments, and I really wish I had heard from all the people who wrote for me during the Yuletide exchange. :( And I said more than just "Love it! Thanks!"

The reason I reply to comments is because I write for small fandoms, and one in particular is not only small, but obscure and nearly dead. Any response I get from other fans is extremely rare, and I will always reply with my eternal gratitude. I dying for connection with other fans. But then AO3 doesn't seem to be much of a platform for developing conversations beyond that.
