No lie, that makes a lot of sense to me. I wouldn't worry about it!

Hey, who says it's not a proper story? I'm glad you had fun writing it.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
There's absolutely nothing wrong with indulging in a little wish fulfillment fic, OP. I daydream stuff like this all the time, but haven't written it down. Maybe I should. And hey, maybe you WILL feel this inspired about a story sometime, you never know.

Now that you've done it once, maybe you can channel it again. Writing is writing, and it's all practice in one way or another. Sometimes the utterly self-indulgent stuff is the best stuff, because you're writing it from your heart.

Agreed. I think anyone who likes writing should take the opportunity to get these sorts of wish fulfillment/self-indulgent stories out of their heads/systems. It's a nice little confidence booster for yourself, which I think everyone deserves to have every now and again, and if it gets the juices going in regards to other sorts of writing, then hey, win-win all around :).

You seem to be having fun with it - so yay?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yes, I am having fun with it... It's just that I feel it's a bit of an odd thing to do. Not the self-inserting, but the intense feelings I'm having about the story and the character in it.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
honestly i think the fact you can feel those moments is insanely cool, and something i would be proud of if i were you. i get it feels weird because of the nature of the story but hey, whatever. it's making you happy!

best of luck with your more serious writing too anon!

Admittedly, yes, it is very cool. Especially the smutty bits (lol).

About self insert... I think that it's hard to write a long fic without internalizing the characters. You need to extrapolate to build on what you know about a character, to make it 'yours', to reimagine. Like, I can write a short story that is completely IC but I need to visuilize character's reaction, to recall their reactions to similar situation in canon. It takes a lot of time. And I can't write their thoughts beyoung the obvious if the canon is not in 1st pers. So all of my long fics are OOC.

Also Dante's Divine Comedy is such a self insert with all his enemies going to hell, literally.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I know right?

Like when my friend pointed that out to me and we talked about it, it made me feel a lot more confident. If some dude can write a self insert fic about his enemies going to hell, and his self insert being considered too 'pure' for hell despite him reveling in his enemies' fates, and have it become a classic- well I think I could get away with pairing myself with this background character.

I like a few published fantasy novels with blatantly self insert protagonists. They're popular books too.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
The super self-indulgent stuff are the things that really inspire me.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
congrats on the 40,000 words. Go you.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, thanks, I guess!

Sooo...OP, who's the character? Anyone interesting?
