What exactly is a hateship?

The definition I've seen used the most is: "A ship involving characters who hate each other, but are also attracted to each other."

IDK if that's how OP is using the term, though.

Belligerent sexual tension is generally just 'couples who bicker and deny their feelings'. They're clearly friends (or more), but they bicker. So, something like Han/Leia from Star Wars.

Hateship is characters who legitimately dislike each other, usually being shipped in a way that capitalizes on that.

Yeah, Belligerent Sexual Tension is pretty much bickering and denying feelings which reminds me of one of my favorite Transformers OTPs (Strongarm/Sideswipe oh yes)

Yeah, Pearl seems to have moved to 'amused condescension', rather than 'jealous hate', and Greg...well, I don't think Greg could hate anybody - a trait he shares with Rose and Steven.

Yeah, but listen to how he says it...there's no hate in his voice. It's just something that happened. 'Yeah, this was an immensely screwed up situation, and I've cut him out of my life to avoid getting in it again, 'cuz he's never actually improved, but...hey, that's no reason to hate him.'

Idk I listened to it and got a completely different vibe than you. Usually you don't say someone is DEAD to you if you're sort of okay with them.

They do in my imagination! And I think there's a lot of backstory we haven't seen yet and a lot we WON'T see that leaves a lot of room for headcanon. I find it hard to believe that Rose and Greg danced and all the tension was over and Pearl stopped trying to get Rose to herself. I think Greg would stand up for himself. And from there...the possibilities are infinite. But I need to go to bed now.

Sure, I mean I don't want them to angrily make out on the show or anything and I doubt they would but ships =/= canon. I built it up in my head a little thinking about possible backstory and ways it could play out.

I will say in the show, to me, they always seem, to me, to act like divorced parenrs who are civil to each other and put Steven's needs first. So I think I latched onto that and it snowballed from there with the what if scenarios.

Fair enough! That's actually an interesting premise - the idea that Pearl and Greg are like divorced parents. They do sort of function that way, just without the previously-existing-relationship part. I'd read a good fic based around that premise.

And of course you could always headcanon in additional/different backstory for them. What if Greg rebounded on Pearl after rose "died" out of grief and confusion and a need for security? I really don't think that's plausible in canon, but it'd be a fun idea to explore in fic. Especially awkward since of course Pearl would also be grieving for Rose - in fact that'd make it even better, and probably the only scenario in which I could even see her considering that kind of relationship with a human, let alone one like Greg.
