Huh, this is curious. This European is more put off by America because everyone is so over the top fake friendly compared to Europeans. It's exhausting. I don't want you to smile at me so much and ask me twenty times if I'm having a good time and tell me how amazing everything is.

Obviously not all Americans are like that, but most Europeans I know feel that way when they get back from the States.

Gotta say, a lot of us are raised to feel like you're not being polite if you're not smiling.

It's also a thing we have to do in retail.

Lol ikr? It's called "keeping one's job".

See but that's the point, it's not "required" to smile to keep your job in every part of the world. We just find that creepy really.

Obviously, you should do it if you want to keep your job and you have to - but that doesn't mean other people from other countries can't find it strange.

Just know it's not our fault.

SA Oh god, I just realized with what we were talking about that looks really passive aggressive.

But I LOLed really hard!

HI ANON! ARE YOU HAVING A GOOD TIME? ISN'T EVERYTHING AMAZING?! :D :D :D

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
All I know is I'm American and I wish our stores lived by the "customers will fucking talk to employees if they need anything" customer service model.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
There are actual people who are just friendly and trying to be positive. My grandpa is one of these people. I'm sure some people thought he was faking being nice, but no, he just enjoyed life and wanted to make sure everyone else did, too.

America is a HUGE country and the part that I live in is not like this at all. I've been to other places that are (and they creep me out a bit too) but we're not a monolith.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, as long as you don't turn around and start bitching when North Americans consider you dour and unfriendly, or just plain rude, that's cool.
