I'm curious, where do you live?

I'm American and I definitely wouldn't say "fuck you" to my mom, and I can't think of too many situations where I would honk at a pedestrian.

I'm not really sure what you mean with "rude to strangers," can you give an example?

Sounds like you've been watching a lot of media set in New York City or L.A. The rest of us are much more polite.

Seriously though, America is a big country with regional differences on what it means to be polite and how it important that is. There are plenty of lovely cities filled with very polite people located all over the nation. Most of us are far more pleasant than movies or tv would have you believe.

Huh, this is curious. This European is more put off by America because everyone is so over the top fake friendly compared to Europeans. It's exhausting. I don't want you to smile at me so much and ask me twenty times if I'm having a good time and tell me how amazing everything is.

Obviously not all Americans are like that, but most Europeans I know feel that way when they get back from the States.

Every year, my city is part of a group that sponsors a whole gaggle of foreign kids for a month-long stay and the local newspaper writes about them and does surveys about what they thought of America and if anything surprised them.

Without fail, every year, they all say they were surprised by how nice we are. And by our food, because we have ridiculous food.

Well, this isn't solely an American thing

I'm sure there are people who say 'Fuck you' to there moms, honk their horns in traffic, and are rude to strangers all over the world

...There's just MORE of those people in America, it sometimes seems

I feel the same way about English teens after watching British TV dramas and movies, like Skins. They make the whole country look like it's full of awful little shitheads.

It's drama, not real life. People don't watch shows to see a bunch of normal polite people.

You've got the wrong idea, OP.

From my experience, you will definitely hear people honking at other cars and pedestrians in big cities and you MIGHT be on the receiving end of a rude comment (this has happened to me twice in a long personal history of US travel), but that's not common. In my mid-sized town, people rarely honk (aside from tapping the horn to get people's attention), I could count on one hand the number of times people were rude to me for no reason, I've never once told my parents "Fuck you" (nor did any of my siblings), etc. TV is TV for a reason - it's more dramatic than reality.

People in the US are like people everywhere else. We're occasionally rude but polite for the most part.

Yeah I think a lot of US behavior is rude. You sort of get used to it, but it used to bug the heck out of me when I lived there. It's all about talking loudly and bragging about yourself. And yeah, it's normal for people to shout at each other for no reason.

I saw a tumblr post once that was like "what's with white people saying "fuck you" to their moms?" Which is totally wrong. I'm white and If I ever said that I would die. She wouldn't have to hit me, I'd be struck down dead by the wrongness of what I'd just done.

This is why I don't like a lot of US dramas these days. It's all so over the top edgy and grim it's not realistic at all. The two times I have been to the US (both times NY), people were incredibly friendly. Yeah, other (old-fashioned?) shows might lean too far the other way and are too idyllic, too nice, but that bothers me a lot less for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
idk what media you've been watching, but it certainly can't be set in the south. The South has a LOT going wrong for it, but no one from the south would ever backtalk their parents like that.

Well, you're not required to say "fuck you" to your mom unless she comes with you to the states. If she does come, you will be required to say it at customs or you will be denied entry.

It depends on where you live. I would never talk to my mother that way, and I don't believe I know anyone who would. Strangers and acquaintances also tend to be very polite and friendly and it's more unusual to come across someone who isn't without good reason.

I mean, sure, it happens, but I'm not sure I would call it the norm. (At least not everywhere in the US.)
