Weight yes, fat no. Your body is going to eat something, but if medical conditions keep you from burning fat then there's lots of important tissues it can devour instead. Fun!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
What medical conditions would these be and what tissues would they use instead of fat?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Muscle is the tissue your body "eats" for nutrients when its not getting what it needs.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
And what medical condition would make your body eat muscles instead of fat?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT, but the body always prefers to eat fat first. It will move on to muscle when there is very little body fat left.

This is not something I need to worry about at the moment - I have excess fat to fuel my workouts!

NAYRT either, but no, it doesn't. The whole "your body will switch to eating fat as soon as it needs to consume stored energy" thing is a myth, and a dangerous one. That's the optimal progression, but it's not guaranteed, and people have caused themselves serious organ and tissue damage by buying into it.

ffs we're talking about two separate things here, not some mythical illness that makes your body go "Pfft. I'll nosh on this muscle over here, forget that fat!"

Medical conditions that can make CICO not apply include chronic stress, Cushing's syndrome, PCOS and hypothyroidism. Not to mention a variety of medications -- often types of birth control and depression meds -- that also hurt the body's ability to lose weight by the Calories In, Calories Out mantra.

And breaking down muscle is just something the body does when it's undernourished for long periods, as often happens when people hear "calories in, calories out is all it takes!" and unknowingly take it to stupid levels.

And none of those conditions stop CICO from applying. They make it easier to gain weight by a few pounds, but CICO still works, and you won't gain weight out of nowhere. You will lose weight if you eat less and your body will not suddenly start to eat muscle if you drop your caloric intake by a reasonable amount.

You can't claim that CICO doesn't work just because some idiots don't understand what healthy eating is and use crash diets instead. That's a whole another ballpark and has nothing to do with CICO. That's just people hurting themselves by being stupid.

I never said it doesn't work. I said it's dangerous to drop a "calories in, calories out!!" with no other information.
