Re: Tropes that can ruin a fic for you

I agree with this. I hate infidelity, which is making it hard for me to read most post Deathly Hallows Harry/Hermione fics because rather than AUs or having breakups first most of them seem to involve infidelity.

If there is a legitimate reason for it (say abusive partner where it is in-character for that person to be abusive) or say seducing a bad guy because it is the only way to stop him, fine. But otherwise no.

IA

Also what makes it even worse is when the cheated-on partner is demonized for being upset.

Yes so much. This happened in the Callie/Arizona fandom when Arizona cheated when they were still together (which, ugh, Shonda why do all your characters cheat?). Fans who favored Arizona got annoyed at Callie for being angry because Arizona lost her leg and therefore should be allowed to get away with cheating because it was really all Callie's fault for not being enough of a caretaker. Ugh.

Oh that makes it 100x worse. No, the character who got cheated on is allowed to be upset over that ffs.

The "best" is when the cheated on partner was demonized earlier for cheating on . The ship doing it though? Totally alright because it's True Love!

Yeah I can work with like an offscreen break-up, say it happened a couple of years ago(in the fic time-line), but my ship being the catalyst for it in the fic is awful and I hate it.

(Thankfully I don't come across it that often but I really dislike it when I do).

Oh god the in-character abusive character is so rare, most of the time when I have seen it it's been a ridiculous OOC crapfest that made no sense.

I always think of the Harry Potter fic that had Ron literally kill a little bird in front of his and Hermione's kids... and then I start giggling because it's so OTT and ridiculous.
