I think Heroes was one of many shows that could've been great, the first season was amazing, but it got completely screwed by the writer's strike occurring during its second season. It dragged through the mud for a few more seasons, and I think at that point, the showrunners needed to try something else, rather than keep recycling a formula that doesn't work anymore.
