11. [SPOILERS for Game of Thrones]

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. Stannis was dead anyway. Brienne just killed him slightly faster.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Renly deserved it. He was going to try killing Stannis himself and Stannis gave him fair warning.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Like how he had Robb killed, with Melisandre and the leeches?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's debatable that it wouldn't have happened regardless given Robb was killed as a result of screwing Walder.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
He was still trying to kill Robb, at the very least.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Robb was a traitor and a usurper.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Then say that for renly, don't make it sound like poor Stannis was acting in self-defense.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Not self-defense maybe but right before Renly was killed he was talking about what he wanted done with Stannis's body. So he was clearly planning on killing him himself even though he knew Stannis was the rightful heir.

The rightful heir stuff is kind of ridiculous. From one point of view the Baratheons are all usurpers. From another point of view there shouldn't be united kingdoms at all and the Targaryens took away the rights of the original rulers of the separate kingdoms. Stannis's point of view isn't any more objectively right than any of the others vying for the throne. Which is kind of the point. There is no black and white morality in either GOT or ASOIAF.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
By the then-current law of Westeros Stannis had the best claim to the throne and Renly knew that, he just didn't care.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
He believed he'd be a better king.

There's a reason why Cersei and Tyrion were happy when Stannis attacked him.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I gave up on GoT when it become obvious they were going the Stannis the Death Eater route. FFS, I like all of five characters in the entire sprawling ASOIAF universe. They just had to ruin one of them.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'm not caught up on the show, but have read the books. And uh, Stannis is not a good guy. I find him fairly interesting, but extremely unsympathetic. The only reason I don't dislike Stannis overall is that the majority of his scenes are from Davos' POV and Davos is one of my absolute favorites.

Spoilers if you're not caught up with the show

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that he's unsympathetic is pretty much the linchpin of his character. But you're right, book!Stannis has many flaws. He's pedantic, humorless, and utterly convinced that he's always right. He's also not the kind of guy who'd burn his daughter alive.

And I love Davos too. He's one of my five.

He actually does have a dry sense of humor.

"Stannis ground his teeth. 'It is not my wish to tamper with your rights and traditions. As to royal guidance, Janos, if you mean that I ought to tell your brothers to choose you, have the courage to say so.'

That took Lord Janos aback. He smiled uncertainly and began to sweat, but Bowen Marsh beside him said, 'Who better to command the black cloaks than a man who once commanded the gold, sire?'

'Any of you, I would think. Even the cook.'"

utterly convinced that he's always right
I bet that's why he listens to what his advisors have to say (even if said advisors are commoners, women, and bastards) and takes their opinion into consideration before making up his mind, including often changing his mind when their arguments convince him. Such stubbornness, many inflexibility, wow.

+1 This is why I actually like book!Stannis a lot. So much stupidity in the series hinges on miscommunication and broken promises, and Stannis is all about the opposite of that, even if it's to his detriment. Although I have to agree with the previous anon that my good opinion of Stannis is largely based on how Davos (and to a lesser extent Jon) see him. Davos is probably my 3rd-favorite pov, after the Stark sisters. I always look forward to his chapters.

This entire plotline was invalid because STANNIS WOULD NEVER KILL SHIREEN OMGWTFBBQQQQQQQ

This so much. Stannis is not sympathetic to me. I don't like him very much. But bloodlines and family were very important to him. He'd never, ever, ever kill Shireen. Ever.

Well, we didn't actually see him die on screen, so, they might still be pulling our leg.

But, I'm so glad Brienne got her revenge in that sense. Also, I never liked Stannis (though I could appreciate his internal morality. But after what he did to his own kid, I won't weep over him.

I think he's still alive.

The inconsistent mess that is Stannis' character in GOT is proof that the writing on that show is shit.

As a Stannis fan, yeah, those last two episodes were bullshit but that felt right.
