Renly deserved it. He was going to try killing Stannis himself and Stannis gave him fair warning.

That's debatable that it wouldn't have happened regardless given Robb was killed as a result of screwing Walder.

Then say that for renly, don't make it sound like poor Stannis was acting in self-defense.

Not self-defense maybe but right before Renly was killed he was talking about what he wanted done with Stannis's body. So he was clearly planning on killing him himself even though he knew Stannis was the rightful heir.

The rightful heir stuff is kind of ridiculous. From one point of view the Baratheons are all usurpers. From another point of view there shouldn't be united kingdoms at all and the Targaryens took away the rights of the original rulers of the separate kingdoms. Stannis's point of view isn't any more objectively right than any of the others vying for the throne. Which is kind of the point. There is no black and white morality in either GOT or ASOIAF.

By the then-current law of Westeros Stannis had the best claim to the throne and Renly knew that, he just didn't care.

There's a reason why Cersei and Tyrion were happy when Stannis attacked him.
