That's bullshit. People aren't entitled to forgiveness just because they have a selfish need to ease their guilty conscience. If someone believes that giving forgiveness to a person who has deeply wronged them is the right course of action then they should do it, but they shouldn't feel pressured into it.

not forgiving someone for fucking up your life doesn't make you a bad person. some people need to offer forgiveness in order to get closure and some don't. it's very dependent on the situation and it definitely shouldn't be done just so the offender can feel unburdened

nayrt but no, people aren't entitled to forgiveness. However, in this situation, it's not about that person really, it's about you and what kind of person you are. You can scream about what's fair and who deserves what and what they don't deserve. But that kind of shows your true colors, too. Forgive and let an old, sad person die in peace, and you assert your own strength of character.

idk man, it still sounds kind of douchey to say that someone is a bad person for not forgiving a person who neglected and then abandoned them for years and years and then comes back once they're at death's door. it would be nice and all if they chose to forgive the person who did that to them but it seems like a dick move to criticize them if they don't.

Depends. Forgiveness doesn't necessarily mean reconciling and letting the person screw you over once more. For some, it just means letting go of the past.

No one should ever be forced to reconcile with a person who hurt them badly, nor does anyone have the right to guilt them into doing so.

This. It's a way of letting go of what was done to you and a way of showing that that person is no longer controlling your life by what they did to you. When you can forgive, it means you've moved past it.

Definitely. It's perfectly consistent to tell a person "I forgive you" and then cut him or her out of your life. You have a right to protect yourself, and that includes removing yourself from the presence of people who have hurt you severely or repeatedly. Forgiveness doesn't mean no consequences.

It's not that they're entitled to forgiveness or that they deserve it because they're dying, but that the person who will live beyond them will never have a chance to reconcile the issues (and their legitimate anger with the person) if they don't do it before the person dies. Forgiving them is for the living, not the dying. Refusing to speak to them and just hating them and letting them die unforgiven will actually be more painful and damaging, ultimately, to the person who lives.

This is, of course, if the dying person hasn't been outright abusive. I don't personally condone forgiving any parent or family member who's been abusive. Fuck 'em.
