Well-adjusted child abuse survivors

[personal profile] feotakahari 2016-02-06 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
This comes from a conversation with my mother. We were talking about representation in fiction, and she said she doesn't feel that her life is represented in the stories she's read. She was abused as a child, but she turned out okay, and fictional characters who've survived child abuse tend to be "psycho" (her term.) Can anyone think of characters she might relate to?

Don't You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey (I am pretty sure).

Harry Potter qualifies I think?

Matilda!

It depends on what types of books she likes to read.

The Dresden Files has a protagonist who was abused as a child. (His foster father used to hit him with baseballs to make him learn to magically shield). He's pretty well-adjusted.

The Hunger Games has Peeta, who turned out alright, but he's not the main POV character and it's not focused on like at all, so IDK if it would count.

There's really not a lot. It doesn't tend to come up with characters unless it's to explain how/why they have some psychological issue.

The show 'Criminal Minds' has that, I think. Obviously a lot of the serial killers/rapists/etc they're after have been abused, but to balance that some of the main characters have been too. Hotch's dad was abusive, Morgan was sexually abused by a coach. All the leads have shitty pasts, to sort of make the point that your mother had, that just because your past was shitty, you don't have to be.

Unfortunately, CM doesn't really delve into its characters' lives often. Only when it might make for a good story. So I doubt it's worth watching 10 years worth of show for a handful of relevant episodes.

Julian Bashir from Star Trek: DS9

Cinderella

Trish in Jessica Jones.

I would argue Parker from Leverage, even if she is a bit odd and a thief.
