i'll be honest - i had no idea it had such a negative connotation for some people and i can't think why it would. although your comment above explains it i've never come across that belief before and where i live is a pretty mixed city. the only time i've ever been on the receiving end of a racially based insult is to do with either my jamaican or jewish heritage.

you know, i probably wouldn't be surprised to hear the things you've been called in the past. i'm sorry you've had to put up with it, and i'm sorry that it gets that much worse in the summertime. i just don't understand how people can do such things and consider it to be acceptable behaviour.

still, the idea of using "british" as an insult is news to me. i've generally managed to escape a lot of abuse because most people assume i am just another white girl, because i'm so pale and don't have any really obvious jamaican or jewish characteristics. i hate people sometimes ):

Right, so your problem with being called British is that people have used it in a derogatory fashion? Fuck me, but what do you think people who don't like you are going to do if you're different from them except use your difference as an insult? Human fucking nature, sweetheart.

Objecting to being called a Brit's like objecting to all references to your gender just because someone called you a bint once.

I've never found being called a Brit insulting. Ever. I quite like it, actually, since I moved all over when I was younger and saying I'm Welsh/Scotch/English gets annoying.

I identify with all three, having to explain that to people who don't know anything about them gets tedious.

I have always identified as British and I don't think it's something to be ashamed of or get angry at.

You're probably the first person I've come across to find it hugely insulting.

Did I mention I live on the british isle, meaning I talk to british people every day? And that the majority of my friends here identify themselves as 'british'? The ones who don't are, like me, people who are here temporarily because of studies.
