Re: 12.
I had no idea that "British" was an offensive term! Thank you for telling me! To think that I've been using it for all of my life. I always just assumed that it was a way of labelling a person as from the British Isles. Or is that offensive too? :x

OP of 12
(Anonymous) 2008-03-03 12:38 am (UTC)(link)And just to clarify, my character does identify himself as British, because he was born when it was still officially called Great Britain (to be exact, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland - he was born in 1904). So yes, I did do my research.
Way to lash out at me for something that was completely not the point of the secret.
not OP

Re: 12.
And The "United Kingdom" or "Great Britain" no longer exists
...I'm sure someone would have mentioned that... instead of continuing to use the terms "Britain", "British", and "the UK" in just about every area of life :/ Just last term I took a uni course in "The Modern British Novel".
Also from your other thread (I skimmed this whole thread before posting): people associate "Brit" with "racist"
That's another thing I haven't come across either. If we're talking about the whole British Empire thing... well, technically the English are to blame for that.
I think perhaps you're in the minority. You say you live in America now? Maybe (and I mean no offence by this) you're a little out of touch with most people's attitudes (that said, I believe the English are the only ones who don't mind being called British). Essentially, being "British" just means that you are from Britain, from the British Isles. That's just geography. It's not a racial slur of any kind, or not as far as I know, and I have lived here for twenty years.

Americans are not generally that anal. But then neither are most BRITS.

Re: 12.
no subject
It sounds like you don't know, but in its original form, Gaul was an ethnic or tribal name that was used in Celtic language as a whole, and believed to be borrowed from Latin around 400BC. It had no specific association with France until Asterix happened and popularized the word as synonymous to France in modern language, and in historical circles, it's still also used for ancient Belgium Switzerland and northern parts of Italy and Spain. Originally, it was used to describe Celtic tribes as a whole.
Back during the Roman conquista, which is when the Holy Britannian Empire was formed, Celts (or Gaul, as they were referred to at the time), inhabited Britain, Ireland, most of Northern Europe and even pieces of Asia.
In other words, your attempt to insult the poster's intelligence is nothing but rude and ignorant, because Holy Britannian Empire could effectively start in any of those territories, and the amount of reverence and deitification they put into the name 'Arthur' in audio-dramas points to British Islands.
I agree with you that Lelouch is at least half-French if you compare to real world politics, though, because his mother has a distinctly French name and considering the territory the Holy Britannian Empire would cover, France would be a part of Britannia.
Re: 12.
I'm sorry that my fellow Americans have made you resent the word, but that doesn't mean that everyone does. There are PLENTY of reasons I should resent being called an American, given even JUST your analogies. But, I dunno, I just don't take offense to being called American or North American or Western Hemispherian any more than I do being called a Missourian.
Though I'm sure my analogy will be proved wrong because I'm an ugly American, too. And nothing will be able to change your mind (which I can respect), but taking your issue with the word and making it EVERY English/Welsh/Scottish/Irish person's issue is just as bad as taking an issue and making it EVERY American's. :\
