Re: Things you can't believe are considered "normal"

Soda.

Okay, I guess it doesn't really count because I get that other people like the taste.
But I don't understand how anyone can find carbonation a pleasurable thing, it's just weird.
And I don't understand how it's acceptable to give children, especially very young children, these incredibly sugary drinks with no nutritional value whatsoever, and in the amount that they do.

I used to work in a supermarket and I'd see the amount of soda people bought on a regular basis, and people giving it to kids, some as young as 2 or 3, and it just makes no sense to me.

Agreed. Ever since I stopped drinking soda, I can't understand the appeal. Same for "fast food" like KFC and McDonalds.

I just feel so lethargic and awful after eating that stuff. Why?

Omg +1. Seeing soda in baby bottles makes me want to cry.

I feel this way about carbonated water. I love diet coke (partly because I can't swallow pills and diet coke is the only thing that masks the flavor). But I love the taste, and the carbonation seems to fit. But carbonated water just tastes strange to me.

I don't get regular, non-diet soda though. Not only do I dislike the taste but I hate the way the sugary soda makes my teeth feel. I will pick a diet version every time of every kind of soda.

YES. I thought I was the only one who felt this way about carbonated water. But give me all the Diet Coke/Pepsi/Big K.

Milk.

Okay, I guess it doesn't really count because I get that other people like the taste.
But I don't understand how anyone can find an animal's bodily secretion a pleasurable thing, it's just weird.
And I don't understand how it's acceptable to give children, especially very young children, these bodily secretions with nutritional value that can easily be substituted for something that isn't a bodily secretion, and in the amount that they do.

I used to work in a supermarket and I'd see the amount of milk people bought on a regular basis, and people giving it to kids, some as young as 2 or 3, and it just makes no sense to me.

Do you extend this to human cum and vaginal secretions?

why wouldn't they? even people who love having sex generally don't enjoy bodily fluids, it's just an included side effect.

Hahaha. Well, milk is actually good for kids unlike soda. And getting enough calcium can be difficult at any age. But I've always hated the taste. I stopped drinking it as soon as I was allowed to.

Eh, I can believe milk is considered normal because eating meat is considered normal. It would be weird if it was normal to eat the flesh, but not drinks its milk.

Related, it's weird to me that certain parts of an animal are a-okay to eat, and others (in the country I live in, anyway) are not. If you're eating an animal, you're eating an animal.

This is why I can't take vegetarians who eat eggs seriously. An egg is still an animal, man. Either it's okay or it isn't.

An egg is not an animal. The eggs you eat are not fertilized.

Yep. I've never been able to get the "hen-period salad" line from "10-inch Hero" out of my head whenever the vegetarian-ness of eggs/egg salad is mentioned.

Re: Things you can't believe are considered "normal"

(Anonymous) 2016-02-07 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
it's still a potential animal, though. i would think that people who are vegetarians for reasons of animal ethics would object to eating it both because it's something that could have been an animal and because it involves animals being kept in conditions that aren't always humane.

I'll agree with you on the inhumane conditions (I get mine from a friend who has her own chickens), but saying an egg should be protected because it could have been an animal is getting perilously close to Right to Life propaganda.

Re: Things you can't believe are considered "normal"

(Anonymous) 2016-02-07 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That doesn't make any sense.

Most vegetarians (non-vegans) who have their diet directly because of animals tend to oppose animals being slaughtered. No animal dies for milk or an egg. Now, you could argue that if the animal is still in a factory farm, it still has a miserable life whether you slaughter it or not, but there's still no animal death involved in an egg or milk so your argument here is pretty weird.

Vegans are the ones who want nothing to do with animals in their daily consumption.

Don't forget, OP, honey is bee barf.

Many people find honey delicious.

I am also soy intolerant and nuts (and nut-derived products) are one of my migraine triggers.

So I'll stick with my animal secretions, thanks. :)

Honey is not actually bee barf.

For me, I like the tingly feeling carbonation gives my tongue. It also helps when I have gas "stuck" in the pipe. Bubbles it right up and out.

I can't have soda anymore, but I still get flavored, unsweetened seltzer water, which fills in my cravings nicely.

For me it's definitely about the taste, but years of drinking zero-calorie cola (which use very little sweetener compared to diet sodas) has absolutely ruined regular sodas for me. I can't even drink regular Coke without wanting to puke a little.

Ugh same. Regular soda just has this nasty syrupy aftertaste to me now.
