The occult and mythology. Sci-fi & fantasy novels. Writing in general.

I love the art of writing. My library is filled with books on writing. I don't really need any advice but I love to see how different authors approach the subject and what their processes are. I also love picking apart stories - to look at why the author chose this word at this time, etc. Looking at old drafts from established authors is super interesting to me.

I recall that Lemony Snicket got asked a question about how to read books, and his answer was: "Like taking apart a clock."

I've started doing that recently. Revisiting books that I absolutely loved and really studying what the author is doing and how they're doing it. It's so much fun!

Old drafts are the best. Makes you wonder why the author changed a particular thing. The original draft of LOTR was a very different beast, for example.

Mythology is something I'm really interested in. Especially mythologies that aren't the usual Greek and Roman and Norse that everyone talks about. I'm really interested in Celtic, Irish, and Welsh myths.

Yessss. Also Scottish mythology. Somewhere in there it kind of overlaps with the Celtic stuff.

I'd love to find out more about the very very ancient religions, as well. Stuff that predated the Greek/Roman/Norse stuff. Also Aztec mythology - man, that's crazy.

It's also cool when you see recurring figures in myths and folklore that sort of crop up in different countries.

I've been getting into Mesopotamian/Babylonian mythology lately. It's pretty fascinating.

Here and there, not much though from what I've seen.

Ooh I love the occult. I'm not actually a believer, but I find it absolutely fascinating.

Anything in particular, anon? Folk practices, witchcraft, occult stories, cults?

Cults are so fascinating to me. I loved reading all the stuff about TM and Scientology and crazy spinoffs of Evangelical Christianity. It's a wild ride!

I also love conspiracy theories, like that whole "lizard people David Icke" thing. That, and UFOs.

I don't actually believe in any of it, I just find it really interesting to read about.

At the moment I'm reading a little about Theosophy, and how you can link that to modern-day Wicca. It's kind of hilarious to me reading about the old fascination white Western people had with Eastern mythology, and how they coopted it - see Aleister Crowley etcetera, the big fascination with Egypt - and how you can STILL see people doing it today. Fluffy bunnies are not a new thing!

That brings to mind a casual interest I have in Hindu stories. Stuff like the tale of Shiva and Sati's troubled marriage is as good or even better than Greek myth (probably because the Hindu gods don't seem quite the assholes the Greek gods were).
