What's your side interest you love a chance to talk about?

[personal profile] sparrow_lately 2016-02-06 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Since I'm jumping with glee at the chance to talk about circumcision, I figured I'd ask. What's a thing you almost never have a chance to talk about, but love discussing? For me it's theology and the history of ancient Judaism and early Christianity, which I studied extensively in college. I almost never get to talk about it these days since I spend my time in grad school and a 9th grade English classroom.

Tell me about your pocket interests! Somebody might want to hear more. :)

The history of law. I'm fascinated by how our laws developed the way they did. I took this one course in law school which was the history of legal theory, tracing the development of different theories of law and how they shaped court decisions. One of my favorite courses.

Tell me your favorite anecdote or history of a law! Or lots of them. That's really cool.

That sounds absolutely fascinating. I got to briefly touch on the history of law in my College course (wrote an essay on Environmental Legislation in Canada) and it was really interesting. What constantly amazes me is how the implementation of even small laws go on to shape the culture and direction of countries.

Gymnastics. The summer olympics time is the best because for about a week other people are willing to listen to me talk about it.

The occult and mythology. Sci-fi & fantasy novels. Writing in general.

I love the art of writing. My library is filled with books on writing. I don't really need any advice but I love to see how different authors approach the subject and what their processes are. I also love picking apart stories - to look at why the author chose this word at this time, etc. Looking at old drafts from established authors is super interesting to me.

Mythology is something I'm really interested in. Especially mythologies that aren't the usual Greek and Roman and Norse that everyone talks about. I'm really interested in Celtic, Irish, and Welsh myths.

Ooh I love the occult. I'm not actually a believer, but I find it absolutely fascinating.

Anything in particular, anon? Folk practices, witchcraft, occult stories, cults?

Interior decorating! Nobody else I know has an interest in it.

Logistics. It's especially interesting in "ancient" times but I'm happy to talk about it for any time period. I find it fascinating. It's really interesting when you see the impact it has on great events, or to think of the monumental task it was for a general just to get his army to the battlefield. Feeding and maintaining an army is a huge problem. Finding a way to get water in the desert. The different ways people adapt to different climates or lack of building materials. How that impacts what they wear or even what kind of society grows up in that area.

I've been saying I love logistics since long before UPS decided it was their thing. :)

Fake theology. Making up pantheons as part of worldbuilding and then creating the how and why for what they demand of their followers and how they interact with the world.

The box office. Is this movie going to make its cost and marketing back? How is is tracking on social media online? How big can I expect it to hope? Will my stock in it go up on HSX? How badly did this flop? What does this mean for the cast?

I know people are going to think it's stupid anyways but for me it's literally all sorts of science about cats, from their bone structure to their communication and body language and it's just all so interesting. I never get to talk about it unless someone asks about why their cat's doing something--like why they wrap their tails around someone and stuff. (The tail wrapping thing is a "I trust you and have affection for you as a companion" thing.)

Languages and how they work. I'm a bit of a language geek. Even if I can find people interested, I don't actually know anyone who speaks the exact set of languages I do.

Typography, the history of typefaces, the effect that the visual form of letters of words has on their meaning in the mind of the reader, artists like Jenny Holzer who explore this effect in their art, your favorite typefaces vs. the ones that make you clench.

(Optima makes me clench. I get it, I appreciate the beauty of its design, but I feel myself viscerally tense when I see it. Sorry, Hermann Zapf.)

Trees. Apparently, back when trees were still required to build ships, there was a huge body of knowledge about what we would today call dendrology. But because it was passed down verbally, much of it was lost to history.

I know a lot about historical fashion. I can date paintings and films fairly accurately based on the fashions. Or I get mad when a show uses the wrong styles for the time period-- like how the movies hate 1830-50s fashions.

For am example of my interest, although I know your icon is a Vermeer some of the things about her attire clearly indicate that it's the mid-17th century. Firstly is her fur-trimmed jacket, which is typical Dutch home attire for the period. It's heavy and maybe quilted, and pretty loose. The seam is set a bit low off the shoulder, and would go lower in the 1670s-80s. Her hair is pulled back in a braided coil with curls at the sides and ribbons, a youthful style. Earlier in the century it would be a little wider at the sides probably with a center part, and later it would be quite tall; so this is in-between.

I love the subject and never really get a chance to talk about it, so I welcome any questions about it.

Theology and history of ancient Judaism and early Christianity sure look - er - not exactly "fun" but very interesting! Sometimes I wish I could take a college course on it instead of just borrowing ma pastor's books on it - but college courses are too expensive and time-consuming for what'll stay just a hobby...

I'm into population genetics and dynamics. How many breeders do you have? Does your population have enough diversity to avoid genetic drift and loss of heterozygosity? What are the risks that it'll just collapse because of inbreeding?

(I actually made a secret about it some time ago and people mocked at it as "porn". Woe.)

Weather and music history. I've been fascinated by weather ever since I was little, and I always like discussing things like big outbreaks of storms (tornadoes especially, since I live in Tornado Alley), or unusual weather events, or things of that sort.

And music history is always so neat, too. I like learning about what musicians have worked with whom, or how certain types of genres came to be, or what sorts of influences some artists have and why. I always find it a bit sad when people show little to no interest in music that came out before they were born-I love learning about how the music landscape changed with time, and discovering stuff from decades past.

Also! I can't believe I forgot it, but the history of Geisha. I'm not an expert and don't claim to be, but I do have like five books about the subject and would buy more if they weren't like 30$ a pop.

Shakespeare. I have fooled several English majors into thinking I was one of them.

Also pirates.
