Languages and how they work. I'm a bit of a language geek. Even if I can find people interested, I don't actually know anyone who speaks the exact set of languages I do.

Which languages do you speak, if I may ask?

I speak all but exclusively English but I think the functions of different languages are SO cool. I love weird little translation hiccups (I had a french friend who would say "I was capable to" when he meant "I was able to"), and the difficulties and weirdness of moving from one language to another (for my aforementioned study of religion I learned a lot about the various ways English is a weak substitute, at times, for Greek, Hebrew, or Aramaic), or etc. I'm a total noob about it but I love it!

This is me too. I have real trouble learning languages but I love learning about different languages and the history of how they developed. I loved my linguistics course in college. Everything from how language develops in a baby to what makes a world language to the physical process of creating sound or hearing to funny turns of phrases and puns - all of it is my jam.

Well, speak is in be relatively fluent in: Dutch, Czech, English and French. I have a basic conversational level in a few more, and also did Latin and Greek in a half-forgotten past.

I took two years of Latin a million years ago....why, I'll never know.

I also now spend 90% of my time around Spanish speakers and regret studying French instead of Spanish in high school.

I only did a year of Spanish and I must admit almost nothing stuck. I worked in Spain briefly and I was mostly lost.

I'm fluent in English, and can manage in French and Italian. I can read menus in German, Czech, and Spanish. I also took Latin in high school.

I came so close to getting a PhD in linguistics, I just couldn't find the money and stupidly started a different Master's program instead of deferring for a year.

See the weird thing is I never even considered studying language, it was just something that I did, I guess.
