Re: What's your side interest you love a chance to talk about?

That sounds absolutely fascinating. I got to briefly touch on the history of law in my College course (wrote an essay on Environmental Legislation in Canada) and it was really interesting. What constantly amazes me is how the implementation of even small laws go on to shape the culture and direction of countries.

Yes, completely. The law both shapes history and is shaped by the mores and beliefs of the time. And lawyers, particularly those who are involved in cutting edge things and pushing for rights, need to know how to balance pushing the law in the right direction with representing their individual client who may actually be best served by the lawyer working within the law as it is now.

It was a great class. It was mostly a discussion class, which was a lot of fun. It required a ton of reading, but it was worth it. Most of us in the class were interested in social justice areas of the law, so it was interesting to think about the history of the law and how it has been used to both help and hurt people's rights.

Like, for example, the history of labor laws and how laws that were originally supposed to benefit and help employees ended up being co-opted by employers and interpreted by conservative courts in ways that maintained the status quo as much as possible.

That sounds like a really excellent College class. Especially for a trainee lawyer (good luck with the exam btw!).

Sorry this is a brief response, btw. Would love to talk more about this but really have to go to bed!

It was actually a law school class. But it really was great.

Sleep well. I'm going to bed soon myself.

SA Will check back on this tomorrow to see if you've answered or not.

Did you ever touch on Russian legal history in your course?

No, sadly it was focused strictly on American legal history. It was a law school course, not a college course. I would have loved to take an international version of the course if it had been offered.

Caught this just on my way off!

Ah, I see. I did actually know you were at law school, as I've been an anon on here for a while. Sorry for the mix up with words there. I didn't mean to cause any offence.
