I don't usually go out after 10 or so, and that's when I'm driving. I wouldn't go out after 10 to walk to a store 4-6 blocks away. I'm a woman and I live in a college town and have to deal with obnoxious towns-people and errant students when I walk during the day -- I'm put off by the thought of dealing with them at night.

I'm the OP of this question, and I'm also a woman living in a college town. Up until recently, I had no qualms about going out late--after midnight, even--for a walk or an errand. (My mom has an advanced case of Mean World Syndrome and I enjoyed thinking of how she'd foam at the mouth if she knew what I was doing! She even told me once "Men will think you're a prostitute if you're out by yourself after dark!") No one ever gave me any real trouble. Students could be obnoxious sometimes, but really, they were mostly just loud. Plus, being white and female, I was never in any danger of being profiled, which seems like the other possible hazard you could experience being out at night.

But lately I've been harassed by people who I'm pretty sure would never have bothered a man, or a group, so I've been rethinking my night-walking habits.
