Poll: Too late to go out?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-07 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
You are up late studying (or marathoning your favorite show) and thinking of hitting a convenience store or all-night grocery that is 4 to 6 blocks away for some snacks.

How late is "too late" for you to go out on a grocery run? Is there a time of night that is basically a de facto curfew for you, beyond which you feel unsafe and don't venture out?

Does being female figure into your decision? How about race?

There is no too late for me. I've always felt safer out at night.

It depends. The year I lived in Quincy, a grocery store and Walmart were just down the street, a two minute walk. I once went shopping at 1AM. Normally I'd say anytime after 10 would make me feel unsafe. But I don't have a car so I would be walking whereever. If I was driving I think anytime would be fine.

Out of curiosity, why 10? That seems so restrictive!

Never. I regularly go out at 3 or 4 AM to grab a coffee while studying, which is about a 30-40 minute there and back again.

There is no too late, but there is some shame when the normal entrance is blocked off and I have to enter through checkout.

I used to feel that way.

Then my local late-night grocery store decided they'd start blocking the normal entrance off at 9pm, and I don't even get off work until then most days.

I have a car so I would just drive over. I'm not worried about going to a convenience store to pick up some stuff at any time of day or night.

I'm a white woman.

Same here. I'm the OP of this post, and while I don't have a car, my home town is very walkable. I never used to think twice about going out at night.

Re: Poll: Too late to go out?

I've never lived anywhere with a 24 hour store within 6 blocks, but I've gone for walks at 3am when I was stressed to clear my head, so I can't imagine any time would stop me.

I'm a white woman.

I'm the OP of this poll; I've done the same. Lately I've been rethinking that.

I don't usually go out after 10 or so, and that's when I'm driving. I wouldn't go out after 10 to walk to a store 4-6 blocks away. I'm a woman and I live in a college town and have to deal with obnoxious towns-people and errant students when I walk during the day -- I'm put off by the thought of dealing with them at night.

No, there isn't. But I live in a place where most things aren't open at night, and prices in night shops come at a premium, so grocery shopping is less likely. But I don't really have a curfew, though there might be area's I'd avoid if possible after a certain hour.

the only thing that factors into me leaving the house for any purpose after 8pm is "am I already wearing pants, or would I need to put pants on in order to do this?"

because once I'm out of pants there is no putting pants back on.

also winter. I don't do shit to go outside in winter, not even for Cheetos.

It might depend on where I live.

I've lived in big cities with lots of people and never felt unsafe no matter what the hour.

I've lived in smaller cities, one where I'm pretty sure I narrowly missed being mugged because I noticed I was being followed (it's a much longer story).

Right now I live in small city where people are mugged most often in the early morning, and only for their phones, but my neighbours are drug dealers, so that adds a risk.

There is no too late. The only too late is if everything is closed. I will happily walk around at 4am without a care.

This is not unique to men in my area. All of my female friends have no issue with doing the same thing.

In my neighborhood, I never feel it's too late, and I am a woman. It's true that the nearest 24 hour places are too far away to walk in a reasonable amount of time so I would have to drive there and that opens me up to less danger. Still, I wouldn't be afrais to walk. I used to walk all around the place at all hours when I lived in a somewhat less safe area. May not have been the best idea, but I was less cautious when I was younger. It's not so much danger but the sense that the whole world is asleep and I'm a loser for still being up.

No such thing as too late. And I live in what can charitably be described as a shithole.

If I need to go to the grocery store, I do it before 3am. If I just want donuts or something from the UDF, I'm good up 'til 6.

Soon as the sun goes down, I'm inside with the doors locked. Just two blocks away is one of the prime drug/hooker strips of my city.

I'll happily wait until 8am when the grocery and dollar store opens instead of chancing the gas station (where shootouts happen on a depressingly regular basis).

Ah, the joys of "affordable" housing. :p

This is why I asked

(Anonymous) 2016-02-07 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I live in a modest-sized midwestern city (population about 50,000) and until very recently never had a qualm about going out--to shop or for a walk--at all hours of the night. I'll freely admit that part of it is that I was brought up by a parent with an advanced case of Mean World Syndrome who still gets upset if I'm out "late"--"late" to her being after 8 p.m. I relished doing something that, if she knew about it, would make Mom foam at the mouth. Childish, I'll admit! But I never met with anyone that made me feel unsafe, until this year:

There was the guy who insisted on walking me home from the store (would not take no for an answer) and hit on me the entire time. I should have just abandoned my groceries and run like fuck, and believe me, I'm still asking myself why I didn't. The worst was having him know where I live. (I've moved since then.) He didn't bother me again, but it was like the definition of creepy.

Then there was the scruffy guy in the van who had apparently decided that he was the Guardian of the Carts, and chased me around the parking lot (in his van, which was seriously scary) screaming "That cart does not belong to you! THAT CART DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU!! Take it back to the store RIGHT NOW or I'm calling the cops! THIEF! THIEF!" (For the record, I wasn't taking the cart off store property at all.) I'm pretty sure he would never have said Boo to a group of people, or a man, but he saw a woman alone and thought this was someone he could harass.

Two fairly minor incidents, but they really shook me up and have made me wonder whether I'm an idiot to go out after, maybe, midnight.

Home delivery.

Not so much because I feel unsafe, but because I don't like to go out when it's cool and late at night is bound to be so.

Technically, there's no such thing as "too late." Sadly, the way society is today makes it difficult for you to even walk down the street without worrying about being shot/mugged/raped now a days, so I'd say after 9 or 10 at night.

Re: Poll: Too late to go out?

Everything around here closes at nine, so that makes the decision easy for me. When I used to live in a bigger city, I'd go out no matter what the time. The weirdos come out at around two in the morning though, so I'd try to avoid going out at those times because I'd rather not have people raving in my face about stuff.

"Too late" for me is dictated by buses and if the places I want to visit are open. The bus to get home has hourly late-night runs from the city that goes down my suburban route, but there is very little reason why I would be out late enough to catch them.
The few reasons I would be out after dark is if I went to see a movie that was only showing late in the day, or if I decided to actually go to some big fireworks show, like New Year or Riverfire.

Mostly however I don't expect to be out after dark, or if I am, I'm heading home like 6-7 PM. Back when Mum had a car there was more allowance on that, but fuel was always a concern then as well, but we did occasionally go out just for the sake of going out to a late-night grocer or just to Macdonalds.

Does being female affect that for me? A little, I think. I am a bit more wary as it gets later, if I'm out on my own, but I also stick to what I think of a tried and true places, like shops with plenty of people around, no alleyways, well-lit areas.
