This is bullshit tho. "Forced" as in I can't play the newest candy crush or get facebook updates? This only applies if you work from your phone or use it to monitor a medical condition or something.

"Forced" as in I can't load the browser in anything less than five minutes, or any other app--like the one I use to manage my pay as you go plan--without the whole thing crashing.

I'm not some asshole who lives on their phone, but I expect it to do certain basic tasks.

Seconded. Plus, I do work from my phone a lot (answering e-mail in particular).

I knew there was another thing that failed; the keyboard refused to load.

dude what, my phone is like five years old and it loads pages just fine. It's a gross exaggeration that a two-year-old phone doesn't run. They run fine, unless something else has happened to it.

I don't think anyone was saying that they can't use their phone past it's contract, just that if your phone DOES go bad when the contract is up, it's much easier to get a new phone and the cell phone companies make it that way.

And two year old phones can absolutely stop running, heck even a one year or one day old phone can stop running, the difference is when it's under your contract you can still do things like call tech support and not be charged.

I use phones until they're pretty much dead but even I know that these companies make the phone cheaply on purpose to pressure people to buy new ones, it's not entirely the fault of the consumer. Even having a phone every 5 years is wasteful in comparison to landlines that could be in a person's house for decades.

I still have a landline and I've had it ever since I moved to Brisbane (coming up on 17-18 years now). I also have two mobiles (one for me, one for Mum), because you can't carry a landline around, and having a landline and at least one mobile gains a discount on my internet.

I find keeping a landline reassuring anyway.

But the annoyance of changing equipment still bugs me because of my modem. I think I've had three in the last 5 years, and the second one is still workable and sitting in my draw. Some time I should visit a Telstra store and ask if it can be used on pre-paid.

Where do you work? A lot of places expect you to be able to in the LEAST be able to check your e-mail at all times.

A working phone is important, and cell phone companies do not build their phones to last in the slightest and after your phone's expected end date, they will not provide you technical support (and if they do it's at a great cost.)

Like there are definitely some people out there who are just into the new and shiny, but a lot of us get new phones because our old phone died for any number of reasons. When I buy a new phone it usually isn't even the latest model, just the one I could get for free under my contract.

I am a wage slave for my local government, and this is not a job requirement for me. If it were, I would accomplish it in the cheapest and easiest way possible. I have had three phones in my entire life. I only buy a new one when my old one breaks.
