Re: Things you can't believe are considered "normal"

I know I'm coming in very late but I still had this open and wanted to reply. I know why I shave. For the genital region, it is because I have fibromyalgia and pubic hair actually hurts if it gets too long. I know, WTF? I often just trim but sometimes I just say fuck it all. For, um, closer, it's because I have literally had the hair wrap around my clit and labia. Let me tell you, that's OW OW OW. It's definitely not the usual reasons. I could give a shit if it didn't actively cause pain.

For armpits, it's because I have PCOS and if I don't, it's harder to keep smell under control, and more importantly, I'm more prone to getting boils. If you've never had boils, they are HELL. I still get them on my thighs occasionally and FUCKING OW.

For legs, it's simple. I prefer the feel of shaved legs. I'm not fussed about doing it regularly and sometimes it'll grow out a bit. There was a period of 3-4yrs where my fibro and RA pain was so bad that it took over an hour to shave because I would have to stop because of the pain.

At that point, I said fuck it and didn't shave. I live in an area that's pretty goddamn liberal and the worst comment I would get is "Fucking Evergreeners" (for those not familiar with WA and specifically the Olympia area, Evergreen is our local very liberal college, that is often derided by even moderates because they are VERY liberal, sometimes even too much so for my taste because of the extremism). To which my response would be, "I wish I could attend, but I can't afford it."

But I never got a single comment, even when I wore shorts and short skirts. Nobody gave a shit. I can't say the same about other areas I've lived in.

Edit to add: When my pain got significantly less, after moving out from my ex (I had no idea how much stress I was under and how much it was causing pain), I started shaving again. My husband, who was under the impression I didn't shave for feminist reasons, asked why I had started, worried I was doing it for societal reasons. I corrected him, and he then asked me, "Do you want me to shave?" I was surprised because no other male (well, okay, my husband identifies as non-binary but prefers the term husband) I have been with has offered (even the other AMAB non-binary partners). Poor thing is incredibly confused about how to go about doing it though, which made me lol like hell.
