Re: Things you can't believe are considered "normal"

Women shaving their body hair. I know why it became a thing (capitalism, to help sell razors) but it still boggles me that people have bought into it and remained into it, seeing it as normal and attractive, for decades.

The existence of anti-intellectualism is pretty boggling, but I suppose it's a matter of life being a terrifying void and it actually being wise for some to remain incurious and uncritical, lest they be sucked into the never-ending darkness.

Except... the history of body hair removal goes back to ancient Egypt? It's not a ~modern mystery~.

That's not the origin of the modern practice nonny. There's such a thing as multiple discovery.

DA So a thing that's been practiced in different cultures in different times is somehow still mind-boggling?

Yes. I don't see why it popping up in different societies makes it any less potentially mind-boggling. Circumcision was listed by someone, and that's been done in multiple cultures throughout history.

Human sacrifice has been practiced in different cultures and yeah I find it pretty mind boggling. Something can be prevalent and still shocking to you.

Then if that's shocking I suggest we find a new word to talk about leg fucking hair.

Do you not understand the point of this thread, or...?

I don't understand why men shaving their bodies hasn't become normal.

(I wouldn't mind, if people didn't act like it was weird when they did shave)

Yeah. I mean, men are on average hairier than women...so if body hair is undesirable, wouldn't it make more sense for it to be normal for the hairier segment of society?

+1000000

I find minimal body hair preferable on pretty much everyone, and it bugs me that removing it is only expected of women.

Because some of us like hairy men and would find a hairless man to be very off-putting and a turn-off?

Plus, there's nothing wrong with the natural state of the human body?

Shaving doesn't boggle my mind. But the fact that it is just assumed that women get rid of all body hair and men get rid of none except that on their face does boggle my mind. I would think variety would be a thing. Or that more men might shave body hair as well.

Also the leg shaving thing was done because it was cheaper and easier to do than buying nylons during a world war. I remember stories about people browning their legs and drawing on a seam to have the appearance of being "properly" dressed in the shortage of a valuable war commodity.

Body hair shaving began with armpit shaving, and it pre-dates WWII and the shortage of nylons. Leg-hair shaving did catch on later. Similarly, the hatred for pubic hair emerged decades later than the leg-hair hate.

I never understood hatred of pubies.

I know exactly why I shave my underarms - because the hair holds onto smell.

On the other hand I don't give a shit about my leg hair, but I don't have legs worth showing off anyway.

Same. If I don't shave, my pits get sweaty and stinky no matter how much deodorant I use. It's a hygiene thing for me.

I know I'm coming in very late but I still had this open and wanted to reply. I know why I shave. For the genital region, it is because I have fibromyalgia and pubic hair actually hurts if it gets too long. I know, WTF? I often just trim but sometimes I just say fuck it all. For, um, closer, it's because I have literally had the hair wrap around my clit and labia. Let me tell you, that's OW OW OW. It's definitely not the usual reasons. I could give a shit if it didn't actively cause pain.

For armpits, it's because I have PCOS and if I don't, it's harder to keep smell under control, and more importantly, I'm more prone to getting boils. If you've never had boils, they are HELL. I still get them on my thighs occasionally and FUCKING OW.

For legs, it's simple. I prefer the feel of shaved legs. I'm not fussed about doing it regularly and sometimes it'll grow out a bit. There was a period of 3-4yrs where my fibro and RA pain was so bad that it took over an hour to shave because I would have to stop because of the pain.

At that point, I said fuck it and didn't shave. I live in an area that's pretty goddamn liberal and the worst comment I would get is "Fucking Evergreeners" (for those not familiar with WA and specifically the Olympia area, Evergreen is our local very liberal college, that is often derided by even moderates because they are VERY liberal, sometimes even too much so for my taste because of the extremism). To which my response would be, "I wish I could attend, but I can't afford it."

But I never got a single comment, even when I wore shorts and short skirts. Nobody gave a shit. I can't say the same about other areas I've lived in.

Edit to add: When my pain got significantly less, after moving out from my ex (I had no idea how much stress I was under and how much it was causing pain), I started shaving again. My husband, who was under the impression I didn't shave for feminist reasons, asked why I had started, worried I was doing it for societal reasons. I corrected him, and he then asked me, "Do you want me to shave?" I was surprised because no other male (well, okay, my husband identifies as non-binary but prefers the term husband) I have been with has offered (even the other AMAB non-binary partners). Poor thing is incredibly confused about how to go about doing it though, which made me lol like hell.
