If you choose to set it in Finland, people are just going to say you chose that setting so you could accurately get away with not having POC.

So there are no interesting stories to be told about Finland?

I have never seen anyone criticize the racial dynamics of How to Train Your Dragon. Take that in whatever direction you want.

Well I'm pretty sure the subtext of this entire conversation is Frozen, for whatever that's worth.

Is this there part where I get to bitch about how areas known to have a history of considerable Sami population also tend to be inhibited by people who are notably shorter than the national average and tend towards a darker complexion than the rest of the country? And how you can sometimes tell Sami ancestry from looking at somebody's face?

Because even if I hate all the squeeing about POC because that's such an incredibly American way to talk about things, I'd still like to see a dashing Disney love interest who's short and narrow-eyed and talking a non-standard dialect.

Why do people keep on claiming that? Yes, Sami might have some distinctive facial features, but they aren't that different from the general population.

I'm of assimilated Sami ancestry; I'm personally familiar with how easily a those things can be ignored. I was nearly adult when it surfaced that my parents' grandparents used to speak Sami around the house, and that that applied for most of my friends and classmates as well. No, not all Sami look like the racist charicatures from the fifties, but I see shades of them still in the people whose ancestry is less than 100% complete Majority Population. It's no coincidence that we're all so much shorter, that so many of us are dark-haired, and it becomes really visible once you realise what you're looking for.

And I think it would've been really refreshing to see those things acknowledged, even though I'm fully aware that Disney don't give a whit about minority representation in tiny Nordic countries.

It's funny: I watched that movie for the very first time the other night and all I could think is: wtf? Why do the Norse have Scottish accents but the boy has a U.S. flat Midwestern accent and the girl a SoCal one? So weird!

I hate that fucking film and that's one of the main reasons for it. But it's all over Western animation when you look for it. Aladdin is probably the worst one.
