Re: Things you wish you could say to people

I really wish I could tell my parents that I'm bi and that every time they say something offensive about LGTBQ people they are talking about me too and that it hurts. But considering I'm currently living at home that would be a bad idea.

Ergh. I'm sorry.

I really hope you get the chance to say this to them one day. My mom already knew I was bi, and said some really thoughtless things about gay people in general. Being able to look at her and say "You do realize that every time you say something like that you're actually talking about me too, right?" felt really, really good.

Unfortunately, this might not be the case with you. I'm very fortunate in that my mom's not a bad or hateful person, just uninformed sometimes, and I wasn't living with her at the time. We still have a very good relationship, which might not be the case with you and your parents.

My parents are very religiously conservative. Although they don't think business should be able to discriminate against gay people, they do believe that homosexuality is wrong. And they buy into the whole idea that there is no such thing as a gay orientation and that people can choose to act or not. And then they claim religious discrimination when it comes to forcing states to recognize gay marriage. And I don't think this is going to change.

I am very sorry to hear that. It must be a difficult situation to be in. May I offer you internet hugs? Or internet cookies, perhaps? **hugs & cookies if you want them**

My parents are very traditional types so I understand. I have decided that I will never tell them I'm bi until when/if I have a girlfriend, making money and live away from home. Best of luck to you.

That's kind of what I've decided. If I have a girlfriend, I'll tell them because it wouldn't be fair to her not to. But if I end up with a man then there is no point. I'm not hurting anyone but myself. Though I still wish I had the courage to tell them anyway.

"live away from home" makes it sound like you're saying homeless.

Not...really? I've been living in my own apartment for a decade, I call it my home, and yet I still talk about going home when I visit my parents. It's an exceedingly common phrase for "the place you grew up or the people you grew up with."
