Are There Any Feminist Sites

(Anonymous) 2016-02-10 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Which talk about the problem with street harassment and sexual violence by PoC.

On most of my regular sites I see lots of discussion about intersectionality, critiquing "white feminists" but nothing the other way around.

Thanks.

No. Because POC Men > White Women on the oppression chart. Try some sites that focus on POC women.

That's stupid. There is no oppression chart. Or their shouldn't be. All types of oppression are equally bad.

I've seen such a chart. I don't think it was trying to imply racism is worse than sexism but that white women are more privileged than PoC men. I'm not sure I agree with that but mostly I just think it's way too nuanced to quantify like that.

There is certainly an oppression chart. So much so, some groups even change whether or not certain groups are POC based on how many oppression points they'll give them.

Asians are POC to BLM groups until they start saying negative things about black men harassing them and then they are told to shut up.

ugh

I guess they forgot about this guy?

(the whole "safe space" concept is being done really really wrong if your post is anything to go by. and I've heard similar stories too)

Hispanics and less so Asians are like Schrodinger's POC.

When they do something good (Tyler Posey), they are POC.

When they do something bad (George Zimmerman), they are white.

On Tumblr there's definitely an implied oppression chart. On the subject of street harassment, I haven't forgotten the post that said "White women: Men can go out wherever they want whenever they want without being afraid! Black men: [Look at the camera like they're on The Office]"

So do white women get to look at the camera when black men say "White people can go wherever they want whenever they want without being afraid"? Or do black men never say that becaue they're perfect and know how to be intersectional?

Plus about a billion.

In this essay I read on racial microaggressions, the authors hypothesized that a white female therapist telling a black patient, "I understand where you're coming from because of my gender and sexism" would be undercutting the black patient's experiences and it would be racist because her experiences with sexism could never rival his experiences with racism. So I have seen that view expressed in a published scholarly essay.

That's crap because the reverse is equally too. Sexism is different than racism but no less bad. A black man can't possibly understand what it is like to deal with sexism anymore than a white woman knows how to deal with racism.

Re: Are There Any Feminist Sites

(Anonymous) 2016-02-10 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's true that she shouldn't say that because she doesn't know what experiencing racism is like and therefore is undercutting his experience by claiming to understand it. But that shouldn't imply that experiencing sexism is less bad. It's just that the sexism she experiences isn't relevant to what her patient is telling her.

Is that a unique problem? White men do that shit too.

Re: Are There Any Feminist Sites

Lets be serious now. It's predominately a problem with a select group of ethnicity and backgrounds.

I don't constantly get harassed by middle class Chinese business men and I don't feel the same level of fear from catcalling in Norway as I do Cairo.

#notALLpoc is just trying to silence the real debate we need to have.

Are you claiming it's a cultural problem or a racial problem, then?

And are you talking globally or in the Western world only? I guess I got the implication from your original comment that there are large numbers of MoC doing this in Western nations because if that's not what you meant I think it would have made a lot more sense to say "problems with harassment in certain parts of the world".

I've never noticed any particular color of guy as worse than others. My personal experience is that white guys are more often in packs, though. Don't think I've ever been creeped on by a group of non-white guys.

Re: Are There Any Feminist Sites

(Anonymous) 2016-02-10 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
This is oddly accurate. The harassment I've gotten from black men has been solo black men; the harassment I've gotten from white guys has been when they're in a group.

Stop lying.

It's 90% blacks or arabs, 9% italians, 1% other.

Out of curiosity, where are you from? I can't say I've been harassed by Italian guys in LA.

AYRT--I could swear that I mentioned something about personal experience somewhere. I've no idea of the aggregate, but I don't even know any Italians and wouldn't know them by sight. Maybe sound if they were speaking Italian. What's your source, or are you picking fights or trolling?

Wrong! You didn't even mention Turks and Persians.

Or Indians. The only actual scary harassment I've had is from Indian dudes.

Not a group, no, but I've been hit on and even groped by single black men, ranging from older teen to as old as my SOs step dad. :/

I hate to say it, but it's why I'm wary of them until I can ascertain that they can be trusted. Which sucks, but I can't just brush those experiences out of my head. I'd react the same way had it been white men or some other race/ethnicity of men who had done that.

Re: Are There Any Feminist Sites

(Anonymous) 2016-02-10 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I also find young men are more often in packs and the older men are alone (yet more incessant about it). And I too have never noticed any race bias. I suppose more white men have creeped on me, with a few pointedly fetishizing my ethnicity (latina), but I do seriously experience more of an age factor.

I think the thing with this: its a multilayered issue and saying its a white issue or a poc issue or whatever is reductive.

I'm white and I mostly get harrassed by white guys.
