I wish I could tell my mother that the way she handled the custody arrangement with my father caused me immense pain and probably contributed significantly to me being kind of fucked up as an adult. I wish I could tell her that every single time he had to leave me with her it left me desolate, and I internalized that desolation and helplessness in the way only a child of three, or five, or seven can internalize something.

I wish I could tell her that I know she spent his child support payments on beer and cigarettes every month, all the while telling me that things like Oreos for my lunch and two whole pieces of sandwich meat for my sandwich were too expensive.

I wish I could ask her what the hell kind of person would do a thing like that. I wish I could make her face the fact that, for all she sees herself as a thoughtful and giving person, she was selfish to the point of cruelty in how she raised her child.

Side note: Given the men's custody rights conversation going on elsewhere in the comments, I feel the need to clarify that none of this is in any way intended to make some kind of a point about men's custody rights.
