Vent Thread

Job hunting is the worst. I'm using Indeed and some posts are just baffling. Why would you need years of experience for an unpaid internship? I though internships were a way to start a career and build experience. Speaking of entry-level, so many of them require years of experience as well, in which case why are they called "entry-level"?

The worst are the posts requiring degrees, years of experience and offering about eight dollars an hour.

That was my rant. What's bugging you lately?

Wow, are you me? I'm in the same position. I have a graduate degree and I still can't find a job. I think I'm somewhere between suspiciously overqualified for the lowest admin work (with my master's I look like I'm not going to stay long, which I probably wouldn't) but I also don't have enough experience for higher level jobs. And yeah, the jobs most specialized in what I want to do ask for like a PhD, a decade of experience, and pay like ten bucks an hour. Pretty sure I'm fucked.

I do have a job, but it's part-time. Not enough hours to live on, so I'm looking for another part-time or a full-time job.

I wish you luck in your search. It's frustrating but you've gotta keep at it.

If I want to sleep I either have to wait until my brain shuts down from exhaustion or do breathing exercises that don't work half the time.

Just shut up brain it's 3 AM I want to sleep

There are an enormous surplus of workers relative to meaningful employed positions, which capital uses to drive down the wages paid to workers. The only solution is concerted unified political action.

Definitely need to raise the minimum wage. I hear they're talking about raising it to $10, which I still don't think is enough.

I'm doing the job hunting thing, too, and YES, the experience part of it all is frustrating as hell (to say nothing of the fact that I'm not exactly sure how people are supposed to GET all this experience if nobody hires them in the first place, but...yeah).

Hope you manage to find something soon, though!

I feel you. I was finally called in for an interview on a managerial position today. They didn't tell us whether we were in or not--instead they're making us come in to work under the table, for cash, below minimum wage, to compete for the job. They want to see "who learns fastest".

More like they want to get a bunch of cheap labor out of people they can make work like dogs out of a desperate desire to be picked for the position.

I'm torn between being irritated it didn't result in a job offer, and being smugly amused at the pathetic greed this employer showed.

wow, is that even legal?

I was just reading an article about this. During the recession, employers could afford to get picky because there were a lot more people looking for work than there were jobs, including a lot of experienced people who had been laid off and were willing to take anything. Now that unemployment is going down, it's causing problems on both sides because employers haven't scaled back their requirements even though there are fewer experienced workers available and willing to take low-level positions. The less experienced people who are left don't qualify for the jobs and employers can't fill vacancies they need filled. It's dumb.

I say, apply for these jobs anyway. If you get an interview, make the case that you can do it (don't talk shit about the company being too picky, just say you are capable of this).
