My last car was a hand-me-down Subaru and I would have stuck with the brand if I could have afforded it (although I like my little Toyota, which us hanging in there well, even after over 8 years.) Mechanics always seemed impressed by Subarus and talked about how you could drive them a long time. They are AWD standard now, which might help in the winter (mine wasn't - too old). Someone from Alaska told me they are a popular brand up there.
