Cars

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
So, my car was recently totaled and I'm wondering what my next car should be. What type of car do you have and how do you like it? Or if you don't have a license, do you have a dream car you'd like? Also, feel free to offer suggestions. The most important thing is that it can handle severe winter weather.

Prius C

Good gas mileage, reasonable prices, and they come in fun colors.

I've been looking at those. But I'm getting a used car and all the ones I've looked at so far have high mileage or they're over budget. I'm trying not to spend too much.

My dream car growing up was always a 1940 Ford Coupe.

These days, my dream car would be a Tesla. And they are supposedly coming out with a $35,000 one in 2018 so that may dream may one day be able to happen!

That looks awesome! I love cars that with a unique appearance. So many cars have that "generic car" look where you can't tell the model or make.

That new Tesla is gorgeous. No way I could afford it though.

Cars these days all look like electric shavers, don't they?

Re: Cars

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
It seems they've gone from square to round. I wonder why?

Oh man, I feel your pain. My car got fuckin' smashed on Christmas Eve a couple years ago. I replaced it with a 2005 Chevy Cobalt and it's quite lovely. The only thing I'd change is the stereo, which I'm saving up to replace.

It seems to be handling the winter fine, but we've had a mild one so far this year. That being said, we've had some really crazy winters the last couple years before I even got it and it doesn't seem to be worse for wear.

I'm looking at some now, there are some cheap ones in my area. What was the mileage on it?

I don't mind older cars, but my parents are trying to convince me that any car older than 2010 isn't worth buying.

130k or so. A bit high, but the thing is that cars made around that time and later aren't as dependent on mileage -- better materials, better construction, etc (not to mention they're obviously newer than some of the shitboxes my mom's friends kept finding. No, I don't want to look at a 1993 Shitvrolet with 200k on it, get the fuck outta my face.) We only had $5000 to spend, so I went with the best I could find. The Cobalt is supposedly kind of a junky car, generally a low-budget castoff, but I've yet to have any serious issue with mine.

It depends on how much money you're willing to spend. A very new car will obviously cost more to buy but less to maintain. An older car like mine, even if it's been well taken care of, will probably need regular maintenance.

I'd need to finance, so it's probably better to buy something a bit newer. I don't have enough to buy one, unless it's super cheap.

That is high though. I've heard you should go under 80k but I'm not too knowledgeable about cars. My dad did say it depends on the car.

Of course, you can never tell if a car will be good or not. My first junky car was awesome. The car I'm replacing was more expensive but I didn't like it much. My dad once bought a car for $100 and it lasted about two years.

I have a Toyota Corolla and it's a pretty good car. It's kind of old and the guy who sold it to me didn't give me as much info as he could have. Not super old though - 2008 and ~85k miles. It'll run for a good long time.

Toyotas and Hondas are known for their longevity, and with good reasons. Japanese cars in general, really.

Dunno about severe winter weather. 4WD? Mine is FWD I think and we do have some shitty days here with regards to roads but most of the time it's not a big deal. What general area do you live in?

I live in Michigan. Our winters can get pretty bad.

Oh, yeah, I'd imagine. You're just one state north of me, but you have to deal with lake effect too, don't you?

Good luck!

I currently drive a Prius and it is hands down the best car I've ever had or driven. That list includes:

- Toyota Camry
- Ford Focus
- Honda Civic
- Nissan 240SX
- Toyotoa Celica
- An old huge Chevy truck that used to be a logging vehicle
- My brother's mini SUV

However, for my next vehicle I'd really like a Tesla Model S.

I've heard many good things about the Prius. They seem pretty expensive though. I'm trying to limit my budget.

Check to see if there are any rebates available. When I got mine there was a $6000 green initiative rebate just for buying any new hybrid vehicle. That put the cost down to around ...$17-18000.00, I believe?

In my experience the cost of fuel and maintenance has also more than made up for the cost of the vehicle. I really only refuel every 2-3 weeks, and the only major maintenance the car has needed in 6 years of ownership is a new battery (which was very easy to DIY, with the help of a friend who had the right tools).

I have a Kia Soul! I used to drive a Mazda Protege but when my pain got really bad and I couldn't get down to get into it, I got my Soul. I love it. The mileage is great, it handles lovely and is super quiet.

Only 'complaint' would be that the factory tires don't have the best snow grip, but that's why we have snow tires. I just don't drive enough since I live so close to work that I've bothered getting any.

Re: Cars

(Anonymous) 2016-02-11 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
My workplace is pretty close to home. I'm just worried because the winters are bad and my last car was awful in in snow.

Toyota Corolla. Good fuel mileage, reliable and just a nice car to drive. I also like the Toyota Yaris. It's got even better fuel mileage but it's smaller and therefore not for everyone.

My last car was a hand-me-down Subaru and I would have stuck with the brand if I could have afforded it (although I like my little Toyota, which us hanging in there well, even after over 8 years.) Mechanics always seemed impressed by Subarus and talked about how you could drive them a long time. They are AWD standard now, which might help in the winter (mine wasn't - too old). Someone from Alaska told me they are a popular brand up there.

My Nissan Sentra was front-wheel drive and did amazingly in snow and ice. Plus i never had to do *any* major repairs on it, just the usual maintenance. It was a '98, it's still running well, and I only ever had to replace the starter. I sold it to a guy who needed a reliable run-around car.

I currently drive an '05 Toyota Camry. Also very reliable, and good in bad weather, but i really dislike the 'anti-lock brake' thing. It's weird.

I actually "inherited" my dad's 98 Acura RL when he finally got a new car. It doesn't have all the new shinies but it drives like a dream. Where I live, we don't get snow frequently, the roads aren't salted, and plows are irregular and flat-out don't come in my area except the interstate.

I had to drive from Olympia to SeaTac (about 45 minutes) in the middle of a snowstorm that was just starting. People here don't know how to drive in the snow. There were at least three near-misses that I avoided because of the car being able to handle extremely well in inclement conditions, even without snow tires. Otherwise, I probably would've had a totaled car.

So, I fucking love this car and can recommend Honda and Acura (which is basically luxury Honda) without fail because I've had the Acura and a Honda. The Honda got totaled in what was seriously an action movie accident involving literally a flying car. Because of how it handled, my ex was able to slam the brakes and stop in time for the other car to land (completely) on the hood. If it didn't handle that well, the other person in the car would likely be dead, and possibly my ex too.

I've heard good things about Tesla and Prius but they are more expensive. Honda has some reasonably priced vehicles and I am pretty much wedded to them at this point. If I didn't have the option of a Honda, my next consideration would be Volkswagen (because of price), and then a Tesla or Prius (but more expensive).
