I wouldn't call Jake shitty, because I'm pretty sure he never actually wanted the relationship in the first place. I definitely remember there being red flags in the beginning of act 6, maybe that weren't that noticeable in the wall of text that is homestuck.

For one thing, I definitely remember Jake implying he viewed a relationship with Dirk as something he couldn't avoid. Come to think of it, it probably had a foreshadowing reference to the temporally-mandatory-severed-head-kiss thing.

Also, Jake's description of the robot dirk is:
1. robot wrestles with him in a way that makes him feel uncomfortable
2. jake complains to dirk, dirk switches it to hard mode or something
3. robot beats the shit out of jake, runs away into the woods to do it against later
4. dirk refuses to turn it off
I'm not sure if i remembered that quite right, but I really wouldn't blame Jake for trying to avoid arguing with Dirk.

Definitely sounds like a re-read is in order for me. O.O

I believe technically that was the Auto-Responder. The Auto-Responder really did go all out shoving Jake at Dirk.

OP: shit i missed this

I do still think both of them could have handled thing better in retrospect, but you're right. Hussie makes both of their actions really easy to sympathise with; I can get Jake, and his running away, and I get Dirk's clinginess too, they're both 16 and never had a relationship before and god knows I've fucked over relationships way more than both of them and it's easy to look back and say "yeah well maybe I should have just communicated better".

But this is also part of what I like about their relationship and I wish fandom would embrace it more whub whub
