I thought Jake was the one who was shitty when they were dating, but a) it's been a long time since I've read it and b) I found Jake annoying overall, so eh.

They were both shitty, and it was both their faults that things went as wrong as their did in this relationship.

Dirk is manipulative and mentioned at one point (just before godtiering) he was kind of just starved for company and Jake, being the only male friend he had, was his only logical romantic target, and that was why he latched onto him as hard as he did. Jake, however, also has a tendency to just space out or run away when things get tough with his friends, and when he felt like he didn't want to date Dirk anymore, just went off the grid and didn't talk to anybody again until Trickster Mode happened.

(I'm not a fan of Jake either tbh, but I find his habits in relation to his assigned title really interesting, hahahaha)

Ok, based on that my interpretation probably has to do with the fact that I've been burned by people like Jake so I'm more sensitive to it.

Also I should read all that shit again. I've been thinking of doing a re-read of all of Homestuck culminating with catching up with the parts I haven't read but it's such a massive undertaking and I'm not sure I'm up for it :O

Do it! It's ending sometime this year, so it's the perfect time to reread it. I'm working on a reread! My millionth or so XD

Secret OP: How I fucking love to see one person with a Vriska icon and one with an Aranea icon conversing. And seeing someone with an Aranea icon saying they're re-reading something for a million times.

But yeah... I didn't like Jake that much either. Which I feel sorta bad for, because I LOVE all the other Alpha kids, if it wasn't for Our Lord and Savior Dave Strider they'd outdo the betas for me, now they're pretty tied. But I still love what Hussie did to this character; the action hero, the good-looking alpha male that everyone falls for, Jane's grandson/bio father, being the one that in the end broke down and turned out completely unfit for adventure and romance.

I'm gonna start a re-read too soon, so if you guys have Skype or something we could do it together? In a kinda aloof fashion; since we obviously won't be at the same place at the same time *double pistols and wink*

Sorry I didn't reply to this yesterday, I saw it at work, but then I got home and was about to reply and dreamwidth was down for some mysterious reason?? I swear I have never been more hyped about checking a fandomsecrets thread and BAM no sire

Oh, I'm the same way--I don't like Jake himself, but I'm very fascinated in what he represents.

I'd be down for skype reread rambles :D Hit me up privately if you can (my skype name contains my real name so I don't really wanna share publicly, hahahaha)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-12 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I used to have Skype as my real name too, but I'm a paranoid twat so I changed it. Now it's Makebates and I so far have like three contacts, so hit me up!

Huss says so yep yep. If you're joining us for re-read rambles on Skype mine's Makebates!

I wouldn't call Jake shitty, because I'm pretty sure he never actually wanted the relationship in the first place. I definitely remember there being red flags in the beginning of act 6, maybe that weren't that noticeable in the wall of text that is homestuck.

For one thing, I definitely remember Jake implying he viewed a relationship with Dirk as something he couldn't avoid. Come to think of it, it probably had a foreshadowing reference to the temporally-mandatory-severed-head-kiss thing.

Also, Jake's description of the robot dirk is:
1. robot wrestles with him in a way that makes him feel uncomfortable
2. jake complains to dirk, dirk switches it to hard mode or something
3. robot beats the shit out of jake, runs away into the woods to do it against later
4. dirk refuses to turn it off
I'm not sure if i remembered that quite right, but I really wouldn't blame Jake for trying to avoid arguing with Dirk.

Definitely sounds like a re-read is in order for me. O.O

(Anonymous) 2016-02-12 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I believe technically that was the Auto-Responder. The Auto-Responder really did go all out shoving Jake at Dirk.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-12 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
OP: shit i missed this

I do still think both of them could have handled thing better in retrospect, but you're right. Hussie makes both of their actions really easy to sympathise with; I can get Jake, and his running away, and I get Dirk's clinginess too, they're both 16 and never had a relationship before and god knows I've fucked over relationships way more than both of them and it's easy to look back and say "yeah well maybe I should have just communicated better".

But this is also part of what I like about their relationship and I wish fandom would embrace it more whub whub
