I kind of felt like that about HTGAWM - not that it was depressing, but that all of the characters were unlikable people and there was a dramatic cliffhanger at the end of every episode. I don't know if Grey's Anatomy is like that in that regard, but I do get the impression Shonda ramps up the drama in general, even for it being a drama.

Shondaland works for some people, but not for me.

This was it for me with HTGAWM and with Scandal after the first season. I need to have a character I can like at least a little. That can even be a villain. But I just found everyone on both shows so unlikable, and not at all people I'd care about.

Grey's is much lighter than either of the others. It is very much a soap opera, and most of the characters are likable at least most of the time. But it is very much about the drama. Awful things keep happening to the characters. Because it basically is a soap opera.
