Job search question

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-02-13 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
So, I think most of you know I'm taking the Bar. And after that I'll hopefully find a job. But after that I've got surgery in March and my sister's wedding in the first week April. So I'm not entirely sure if I should just plan on living at home through till April and look for jobs that start after that, or if I should look for jobs that start in mid to late March and then just let them know that I'll be having surgery and then traveling to New Hampshire for a week (I'm a bridesmaid, so I have to be there through everything). And the other things is that my job, when I find one, probably won't be here in San Antonio. And I'm not sure I want to be living on my own dealing with recovery from surgery. And my dad will be having surgery a few weeks before that on his eyelids and so having me still in the house would probably be helpful for them (my mom had surgery a month ago on her hand and isn't able to do much right now).

Wait until you're hired on to tell them you're going to be gone for a week. Most places don't want to hire an employee who's already making demands.

Unfair bullshit, but true, at least for bottom-tier jobs.

That's kind of why I feel it might be better to look for something starting in April. I don't want to be seen as a difficult employee. But the surgery is necessary, and my only sister is getting married and I'm not going to miss that.

Look for jobs with a projected April start. Not only will you annoy the crap out of your employers if you get hired and then are gone for two significant chunks of time for commitments you knew about ahead of time, you'll probably screw up your own onboarding process and make things harder on yourself. You'll also be dealing with a lot more pressure to recover and get right back into things after the surgery, which isn't a great idea in terms of your health.

If you want to pick up some work in the meantime, look into temp placements - you can often get a short-term contract that's just for a few days or a week or two, which will give you money and give you something to say you were doing during the gap between writing the bar and starting a full-time job.
