For me, it depends on the characters and the tone of the asking-- because yeah, for some it can be condescending to constantly ask, and it could be a 'you should trust me to speak up, when have I ever given you the notion that I wouldn't be able to do so?', but I mean, if both characters are new to having a physical relationship, the person asking might be nervous and might actually need the reassurance that they're doing the right thing and that their partner is into it. And that would read as very different from a character asking those questions from more of a position of power, for lack of a better term.

I can see where OP is coming from, because depending on the characters and their dynamic, those questions could come across as more wheedling than honestly consent-seeking, but... I don't know, I guess I normally avoid reading about couples where I would read their dynamic that way? And some of it depends on whose head you're in, if you get any insight into either party's thoughts.

Like, I do mostly like when the couple has a running dialogue on active consent, but it definitely doesn't need to be a new question for every little thing in most fics, and I understand that my life experience isn't everyone's and we've all got different preferences and different things informing those preferences, so I wouldn't call someone wrong/bad for preferring a mostly-tacit approach to establishing consent. It sucks if you're in a fandom/corner of your fandom where there's one 'right' way of doing things and people insist on you laying out your private life to justify why you like or don't like things, though, you should absolutely be able to voice your preferences without disclosing your own traumas and you should be free to point out how the 'right way' can also be problematic without fearing being dogpiled.

And it depends on the circumstances as well! I just wrote a fic where there are times it's super "May I do this? Is this okay? Are you sure about that?" and other times it's frantic-fuck-against-the-wall, and both are perfectly in-character.

(Also, this secret made me realise well done consent scenes are a kink. That is...surprisingly mild of me.)
