Presuming you're female (I never pay attention to the gender of the named users, sorry) do you have any female friends you'd feel comfortable going with - ones you're already totally comfortable talking about sex with?

In my experience it's a lot more fun to go with one or more female friends. Also, going at night, and getting a bit drunk first makes it a lot more fun, IMO. Though I suppose if you're going to be buying stuff, then being drunk may not make for the best purchasing decisions.

It's not even that it's uncomfortable, that's not why I like to be a little drunk before I go in. I just find that being drunk keeps me from getting too analytical about everything (perhaps this is not a problem you have, in which case disregard this). I'm gray ace, so being analytical about sex is basically my default. The booze helps relax me and also makes me a little stupid, and thus, less analytical, which makes the whole experience a lot better. Because a lot of the stuff in sex shops seems pretty garish and tacky if you're not in the right head space.
