An AU based (extremely loosely) on wolf pack dynamics. In addition to male and female there are three secondary genders: omegas, alphas, and betas. Omegas go into heat, and omega males have self-lubricating arses. Alphas have big cocks and are extremely attracted by the pheromones an Omega emits when they are in heat. Betas are like regular people. In most iterations of the Omegaverse, omega males can become pregnant. Alphas have "knots" on their cocks, which are essentially lumps of erectile tissue near the base, which swell as the alpha fucks an omega in heat, temporarily locking the pair together at the point of orgasm.

There tends to be some amount of gender essentialism with ABO fics. Alphas are often kind of dominant, and can be written as possessive and aggressive, while omegas are often less dominant, and can be written as submissive and vulnerable. This ranges from really heavy gender essentialism, to really mild gender essentialism, to fics that buck gender essentialism entirely and portray the Omega as being more capable, badass, and in control than the alpha.

There are many different iterations of the Omegaverse. It's an entirely fan-created concept, derived from a SPN kink meme prompt. There's really no "one true Omegaverse" or anything like that. Different writers incorporate different elements into their Omegaverse fics depending on what suits them.
