Any recs? I prefer something with a hopeful/happy ending, but it's not totally necessary.

Tender Mercies. Starts with the hero at rock bottom, is about him trying to figure out who he is now that he's pissed away his career and family.

Definitely Whitnail and I. It has the ending all alcoholics need to see.

Why is the ending all alcoholics need to see? (Genuine question, I probably agree with you, I just want to know what your reasoning is.)

Oooh yeah, seconding. I was racking my brain for movies about alcoholics, and it doesn't get more alcoholic than Withnail & I.

Hateship/Loveship...although I don't remember if the guy was struggling with alcohol or drugs...

It's the only movie I can think of, off the bat.

The 1954 Star Is Born. For a 50s musical starring Judy Garland it's surprisingly harsh.

When a Man Loves a Woman with Meg Ryan. It's painful to watch if you've every been (or known) an addict, but the emotions are very real. My best friend was an alcoholic, and this movie hit so many right buttons that it felt like I was watching parts of her life. But it is hopeful, too, so I'd recommend it.

I was impressed by the short film Functional Alcoholics. It's a tricky mix of humor and tragedy that ultimately feels very poignant. I wouldn't call the ending happy or hopeful though. It's...a complicated ending. Anyway, you can watch it here if you are so inclined:

Damn it, I meant Successful Alcoholics, that's what it's actually called.
