As someone who mainly watches Japanese kid's shows, both anime and live-action... I kinda disagree? There are calm bits of fandom, yeah, but there's also the shitty bits. They're just more self-contained, I guess, so you don't really see either unless you go looking.

And I'd actually say kid's shows are way worse about selling merch. Since most of them are focused around some kind of merch and all.

I think it always depends on the show. From what I've seen it's more on the calm side with some bickering now and then, unless we are talking about the Digimon/Pokémon fandoms. Now those are risky waters and one has to be really careful.

While they are focused to sell one thing be it cards or spinning tops, they don't mean to drag you into the merchandise hell like regular shows. Seeing how Bandai milks SM and what happened to Free!, HQ, hell even Osomatsu-san really got me wondering about this actually. Sure, nothing is free of sins, but it's easier to see how and where kid's shows are trying to make you buy/like something, and say no to its call.

Eh, it's easy enough to avoid the obvious kid's merch, but kid's shows definitely get their fair share of fanservice merch too. They're just not advertised as much or in the same ways as the kid's merch.

Sometimes I remember all the Precure porn drama on Tumblr. They even had a blog dedicated to call-out some people.

I remember that the Inazuma Fandom almost had the same too, but it was quickly extinguished so it didn't burn down the entire fandom.

Just speaking from (limited, card-game anime only) experience, it really depends on the fandom. Like, Vanguard's always seemed fairly chill, though not perfect, but on the other hand, Yugioh fandom is very often a warzone and a nightmare.

We are generally pretty good about not tagging hate though so it's not too hard to avoid a lot of it.

(I am kind of loling about the Buddyfight image here though bc that is definitely a show meant to sell cards first and tell a story second. Card game anime is like that.

That said, BUDDYFIGHT :DDD)
