Re: *spoilers for Derkholm but a strong rec nonetheless!*
Yeah, it completely went over my head the first time, and even now I wonder if she focused on the expulsion to hide how freaked out she was, you know?
Plus, I finally realized that the wizards are playing with game boys at the beginning of the book (I think they were calculators, at least?)
But, holy shit Querida! She's like, fucking Umbridge if Umbridge was genuinely working for the benefit of wizard-kind. I hate her so much.
I need to reread this book.
Ooh, did you ever read her The Tough Guide to Fantasyland? It's a parody, but I think it's supposed to kind of be the book that tourists in DLoD would buy, before taking a trip? It's a blast. :D

(Anonymous) 2016-02-14 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)Derkholm derkholm derkholm ;_;
Sorry I'm kind of overenthusiastic about this because I remember I tried to rec it to friends in middle school and they were turned off after the first couple chapters so it makes me so happy that someone else liked it! o/
I love Howl (and the Ghibli version of it!) but my knee-jerk reaction for that film was "why not Derkholm?!". I think it would do really well either live-action or animated... but really, the characterizations are so lovely. Even if characters/scenes are cut out... well, I would definitely be up for a movie regardless. |D
Yeah, I was never too sure. But I'm glad she's living happily with Geoffrey in the sequel!
Ahahaha you hate Querida, really?! I think she's such a crotchety old lady but I remember reading somewhere that that was the character DWJ styled after herself so I can't hate her too much. That being said, I could never understand her... feelings??? towards first Mara and then Callette. Like, there's obviously disgruntlement towards Derk but I wonder if my shipping goggles are on too tight to see something-like-romantic-interest there.
Yup, I've read that! I love DWJ (though the Derkholm stuff is still my favorite) -- in fact, the Tough Guide was what got me into her works! I am 100% ashamed for saying I totally headcanoned Reville as the Thief Guild Master's Son even though it's more likely to be Reville's son.
Have you read Reflections On the Magic of Writing (2012)? It's nonfiction and very meta and, I think, published after her death? I love her descriptions of Tolkien as a professor though and the absurdities of the sci-fi/fantasy genre.
Re: *spoilers for Derkholm but a strong rec nonetheless!*
It would be a lovely movie! Or even a tv special, in the realm of Sherlock's three long episodes/season model, I think .
Me too!
Yeah, I do, I just double checked the ending, to make sure I hadn't misremembered, and she cast a spell on Mara (without her consent) to make Mara want to leave Dirk (which is ew) but it also made Mara not interested in their children dying (or thought-to-be-dead, at least), plus it was all because Querida had married Mara's dad, and thought Dirk wasn't good enough?
Meddling MILs are one thing, meddling MILs who have magic power that let's them erase the love their child feels for their child's partner, is a whole 'nother realm of wtf.
Sweet. :D Well, Cheyney has been around for what, 40 years? So maybe he was the first Thief Guild Master's Son, and his son will be the next. ^_~
I have not, no, I'll need to do that!
